Henry, full of curiosity, patted his godmother’s knee with his little hand and looked up. “Godmom, how come you can babble like that too?”

“Huh?” Milka blinked, not following. “What did you say, honey?”

After Mia explained what Henry meant, Milka burst out laughing, scooped Henry into her arms, and after dinner, sat with him, practicing English together.

Henry listened, trying to understand, and—with the teacher’s help—explained to Swift, “My godmom says it means we’re friends who always eat together.”

Johnny was delighted, but still had questions. “What’s a godmom?”

Without thinking, Henry blurted out in Mandarin, “Don’t you have them in your country? Silly! A godmom is the godfather’s favorite kid.”
