Anya could be totally clueless sometimes, but when it mattered, she was sharp as a tack. She got fired up right away. “No way. Milka always keeps her work and private life separate. She never lets one affect the other. Are you sure someone didn’t report you?”
“You work at Havenbrook, and HQ has no idea what actually goes on here. How would they know about your attitude unless someone tipped them off? It’s gotta be someone snitching.”
Sure enough, having a friend to vent with made everything feel less overwhelming. Not long ago, Milka hadn’t even wanted to eat, but now, chatting with Anya over noodles, she found herself eating more than she realized. “See, you thought of it too. I knew something was off as soon as I got the call. The more I listened, the more suspicious it sounded—someone’s definitely behind this.”
Anya suddenly lost her own appetite, worry creasing her brow. “Milka, do you have any suspects?”
Milka nodded. “There’s only one person here with connections to HQ.”
Anya’s eyes went wide as she caught on. She sounded panicked. “Milka, isn’t that the guy who has a crush on you? Why would he do that?”
Milka shrugged and tried to lighten the mood. “That’s just how people are sometimes. Maybe there’s a shot at a promotion. Maybe it’s something else. People do weird things for their own reasons.”
Anya picked at her food, looking glum. “Will you get in trouble?”
“I don’t think so. I haven’t done anything wrong, and the company will check things out. But I’m worried about something else…”
Anya leaned in. “Worried about what?”
“I’m afraid HQ will call me back.”
Anya protested right away, “No way! You’re basically family now—if you leave, I’ll lose my honorary aunt!”
Milka grinned. “You silly girl, I’m just saying I’m worried. Nothing’s happened yet. Eat your noodles before they get soggy.”
Anya absentmindedly scooped up a few more bites.
