“It’s a relief talking to someone who actually gets it,” Teddy said, not bothering to sugarcoat his words.
The woman raised an eyebrow. “So, what do you want?”
“The Dark Web.”
Ten minutes later, Teddy stepped outside and called Andre. “No sign of Conner’s tracker on the Dark Web. The location is here!”
Kristen watched Teddy’s retreating figure, then pulled out her phone and scrolled to a familiar contact. She hit call.
The voice on the other end was impatient. “What now?”
“Your brother-in-law’s got a hidden card. He’s been keeping secrets.”
Cooper frowned, waiting.
“It’s Teddy.”
Cooper hung up on the spot, mind racing. How did she know that? Sure, he knew all his brother-in-law’s closest friends—he’d met them plenty of times, especially at family birthdays. But there was no way an outsider should know. So how did she find out?
Kristen looked at her phone and muttered, “I haven’t even asked my sweetie yet.”
Meanwhile, Conner got the news he needed. That night, everyone was on the move.
At Miles’s place.
Maja finally saw Dean—barely recognizable, lying on the floor in a mess of blood. One of his fingers was gone. That’s how Maja knew it was him.
Dean had his ear pressed to the ground. He heard footsteps and blinked open his eyes, but everything was just a bloody blur.
His eyes burned with hate, but he flashed a twisted smile. “Ms. Maja, know your place.”
Maja knew exactly where she stood. “I know Mr. Kon was your brother, and I killed him. You want revenge. The only reason you haven’t finished this is because Dark Web still wants something. You can’t count on Conner’s people. I came here knowing there’s no way I’m walking out alive.
Dean saved my life. I’m here to pay him back. Maybe if you let him go, and if Conner betrays me, I’ll just get mad enough to hand you the shipment out of spite.”
“The chances of that are tiny.”
“But not zero.”
“I don’t gamble.”
Miles looked at Maja, realizing there’d be no “friendly cooperation” here. “Ms. Maja, looks like we’re doing this my way.”
