“How many months has it been?”
“More than a few.”
Maja just stared. Conner’s men, like Conner himself, made her skin crawl.
“Let’s move. If the Dark Web tracks us down again, you’ll be running for your life—again.”
Dawn was breaking as they finally emerged from the mountains.
Oddly enough, Maja was certain now that Conner wasn’t going to hurt her. Even with her hands tied in the back seat, she felt a wave of relief—like she’d just dodged something far worse.
As their car pulled away, another pack of men, faces hard and dangerous, arrived at the cabin.
They stepped into the empty, ransacked room. The dust was trampled, and a set of women’s footprints stood out clearly on the floorboards.
“She slipped away again! Maja’s always one step ahead!”
The leader crouched, examining the unique shoe print. “No. Conner’s team got here first.”
“So what’s our next move?”
“A head-on fight’s a dead end. We’ve got her man—let’s take him back to the Dark Web.”

At the hideout—
A scout who’d dug up Dean’s background hurried in to report. “Boss Carter, I checked—turns out the man Dark Web grabbed is named Dean. He studied in Eldoria, he’s a doctor. Locals say he’s... the lady of the house’s boy toy.”
“What?”
In her room, Maja heard the report. Her eyes, dull and resigned a second ago, suddenly sparked with life. Her bound hands clenched behind her back.

Newtown.
“What?” Conner hadn’t slept a wink—he’d just closed his eyes when the phone woke him, and the next call had him sitting bolt upright.
“Boss, you sound just as shocked as I was.”
Conner’s sleepiness vanished. He lit a cigarette, took a long drag. “You’re saying Dean is my brother-in-law? No way.”

Once the Dark Web guys were gone, Maja changed back into her usual clothes and got in the car, ready to go.
The only reason the Dark Web grabbed Dean was to bait Maja. They wanted her, all for those goods.
As for those goods…
Maja said quietly, “Don’t let Annie know you found me.”

Inside the Dark Web’s lair—
Dean sat slumped, bloodied and half-conscious from the beating.
Miles watched him, a smirk on his face. “You really are a lovesick fool. Bet even Emmery never loved her like this. So, Dean, who do you think Maja loves more—you or Emmery?”
Dean turned away, too battered to reply.
“Well, we’ll find out soon enough.”
