Not everyone in the room was a sycophant of the Adams family. There were still those with a conscience.
As one person spoke, another quickly chimed in. “That’s right. I was a classmate of Larry’s mother. When those rumors first started, I always had my doubts. The stories about her being a mistress… I found it unbelievable. Back in college, Samantha Lane had a serious boyfriend. They were deeply in love, and everyone knew they planned to get married and move abroad after graduation. I never understood how things ended up the way they did.”
“Exactly. Samantha was a very principled person. She had countless suitors in college, including some well-known heirs, but she never gave them the time of day. The rumors that she was a vain, materialistic woman never sat right with me…”
“So, does this mean there was something else going on back then?”
These comments planted seeds of doubt in others’ minds. The crowd looked at Joseph Adams and Kimberly Howard on the stage, struggling to reconcile the couple before them with the memories they had of their old acquaintance.
Kimberly’s expression faltered. She hadn’t expected the elder Mr. Williams to be so ruthless, to publicly tear them down and rally support for Larry. This couldn't be happening.
After all these years as Mrs. Adams, she had worked so hard to elevate her son to this position. She was so close, just a hair’s breadth away from securing a lifetime of wealth, luxury, and respect. She wouldn’t let her carefully crafted reputation be destroyed like this.
Besides, there was no evidence from back then. She refused to believe Larry could have found anything.
Recalling the past, Kimberly regained her composure and was about to speak, but Sarah Brown saw her intention and cut her off. This woman was a master of evasion; the best strategy was to silence her.
“It’s strange, isn’t it? All these years, it seems none of us realized it was just gossip…”
The consensus was clear: no one had seen a thing.
Sarah surveyed the room and continued, “Since no one here was a witness, let’s not jump to conclusions based on rumors. In any situation, you need evidence before you can judge the truth. Tonight, Larry brought the police here. Why don’t we just listen to what they have to say? The police operate on facts and evidence. They won’t wrong an innocent person. Don’t you agree?”
Sarah’s words effectively shut down any attempt by Kimberly to regain control of the narrative.
