Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 788

Eric Morris arched an eyebrow and looked at him. “Do you know why I’m doing all this?”

Dennis Williams nodded. “I do. I’ve seen how you’ve been paving the way for her lately. I think you want Camila to have more confidence, no matter what challenges she faces in the future.”

He paused, then added, “But honestly, I don’t think it’s enough.”

“Oh?” Eric let out a soft chuckle. “Not enough? Why not? From where I stand, it’s plenty.”

With Hamlin Sanders and Molly looking out for her, Camila wouldn’t be so easily pushed around. And if the Williams family ever tried to give her trouble, it wouldn’t be so simple for them either. The Sanders and Webb families were every bit as influential as the Williamses. At the very least, standing alongside him, Camila would have much more to rely on than she does now.

But Dennis realized he might have misunderstood Eric’s intentions for smoothing out Camila’s path. The old man didn’t set the bar quite as high as he did. Eric just wanted Camila Davis to have more options in life—simple as that.

Dennis, though, wanted something more. But he pushed those thoughts aside and said nothing, quietly staying with Eric while they finished their game of chess.

When the match ended, Dennis was just a little behind. Eric glanced at the board and raised his eyebrows, teasing, “You’re pretty good at this, kid, even letting me win on purpose!”

Dennis had clearly had a chance to block his advance but hadn’t taken it.

Dennis smiled politely. “It’s my first time playing with you, sir. I figured I’d let you have this one.”

Eric couldn’t help but laugh, half amused, half exasperated. “Who told you to go easy on me? I’m not afraid to lose, you know! And besides, we haven’t finished our earlier conversation.”
