After singing Dennis’s praises, Camila Davis’s expression turned a little troubled. “If only I were as skilled as you. It was honestly terrifying just now, having someone see right through me out of nowhere. I was so on edge during the treatment, I didn’t dare let my mind wander for a second.”
Seeing the worry clouding her face, Dennis couldn’t help but chuckle softly. He slipped an arm around her and pulled her gently into his embrace, his voice warm. “There’s no need to be afraid. Next time we see him, just ask him not to use that ability on you.”
Camila looked up at him, surprised. “He can actually control it?”
Dennis grinned, amused. “Of course he can. If he couldn’t, every time he stepped outside, he’d be bombarded by the thoughts of everyone on the street. If that were the case, I’m pretty sure Mr. Parsons would have lost his mind years ago! You noticed the hearing aids on him, right? That’s because, when he was younger, he couldn’t control it. The feedback messed with his hearing.”
Camila hadn’t expected that. Suddenly she felt both sympathy and admiration for Mr. Parsons, and a hint of relief as well. “Good thing he can control it now. Otherwise, that would be far too scary.”
Having learned about Mr. Parsons’ ability, Camila didn’t press for more. Instead, she quietly reviewed the cases she’d organized and the follow-up treatments she’d planned for the day. Dennis watched her work with quiet appreciation, choosing not to disturb her. As much as he enjoyed teasing her, he found her focus and confidence when she worked absolutely captivating—she didn’t even realize how impossible it was to look away from her in those moments.
He shifted lazily in his seat, propping his head on one hand, content to simply watch her. By the time the car pulled up to Eagle’s Peak Estate and came to a stop, Camila was still lost in thought.
Dennis rapped lightly on the window and called out, “Ms. Davis, we’re home.”
“Huh? Oh, right…” Camila snapped out of her trance, quickly finishing her notes before climbing out of the car with Dennis and following him through the gates.
At night, Eagle’s Peak Estate was wrapped in serene, peaceful beauty. Bright lamps lined the winding cobblestone paths, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves of a tall ginkgo tree nearby.
Camila could feel a chill in the air. She tilted her head up, gazing at the ginkgo’s leaves that were just starting to turn, and said to Dennis, “It’s getting colder. When it finally snows, will the ground be covered in golden leaves?”
Dennis glanced at the tree as well. “You might see that even before it snows.”
Camila smiled. “Then I’ll look forward to it.”
