Camila listened to Dennis whisper sweet words, unable to stop herself from smiling as a gentle warmth bloomed in her chest.
But she quipped, “If someone’s actually willing to buy, then sell it! Take the money and run. When the time comes, I’ll just come back myself. We’ll make a tidy profit!”
Dennis chuckled, reaching out to gently pinch her cheek. “How come I never noticed before that our Camila is such a little money-grubber?”
Camila replied with perfect composure, “Maybe love makes you blind, so you just didn’t see it. I’ve always been this way! After all, my line of work burns through cash faster than you can imagine.”
Ever since she’d returned to her old profession, every cent she poured into research had to be calculated down to the penny. Otherwise, it was all too easy to see it vanish into thin air.
Dennis understood, so he didn’t push the issue. Still, there was a dark, thoughtful look in his eyes.
That very evening, Walter Wilson received an unexpected report from Aiden. “The new lab just got a huge investment,” Aiden said. “The investor specified that the funds are to be used as research financing.”
Walter was surprised. “Which company invested?”
Aiden replied honestly, “An overseas tech group called The Smith Group. I looked it up—it’s the very first company Dennis Williams started during his time abroad, now listed on Wall Street.”
His voice dropped as he finished, and he glanced carefully at his boss.
Walter’s face remained unreadable. “The new lab doesn’t need outside investment right now. We’ve got enough capital on hand.”
“…Alright then.”
Aiden hesitated before quietly accepting the order. In his opinion, there was no reason to turn down free money. After all, it was being offered on a silver platter. Why not take it and put it to good use? But… given the rivalry between the two men, as an assistant, he knew better than to say more.
What he didn’t expect was that same night, Dennis Williams himself called Walter.
Dennis’s voice was calm but serious. “Mr. Wilson, may I ask why you turned down my investment?”
