Yet, even with things escalating to this point, Camila didn’t let anger cloud her judgment. She kept her composure as she spoke. “Since I arrived today, I haven’t opened the file again. There’s a security camera right behind my desk—if any of you doubt me, you’re welcome to check the footage.”

She paused, her voice steady. “I’m not saying this to dodge responsibility. If there’s an error in the data, then as team lead, I’ll accept the consequences as the rules demand. I’ll personally apologize to the injured colleague and cover her medical expenses—whatever she needs.”

“But I want to make it clear: the data was never tampered with while it was in my hands. I hope you’ll give me the chance to prove my integrity.”

Harper’s eyes narrowed, and before anyone else could speak, she cut in sharply, “So what—you’re saying you did nothing wrong, and it was Benjamin who sabotaged the file? Benjamin’s been the last to leave the lab every night for this project. I’ve seen his dedication myself! How can you try to pin this on him just to escape blame?”

She made it sound as if she was defending Benjamin Torres out of fairness.

Garth, standing nearby, exploded. “You’re being impossibly stubborn! The facts are right in front of us and you’re still making excuses! And don’t you realize your statements are contradicting each other?”

Camila met his outburst with unruffled calm. “There’s no contradiction. I just refuse to admit to something I didn’t do. If somebody did frame me, that would ruin my reputation. I’m willing to take responsibility because this file was our team’s work. If one set of data caused delays, I’ll answer for it.”

As she finished, the room grew tense. All the senior staff aside from Abner Young frowned, clearly dissatisfied with Camila’s stance. To them, she sounded evasive, just like Garth had said.

He now went a step further, voice harsh and final. “Camila Davis, you clearly don’t understand your mistake. Even now, you’re twisting the facts! People on the outside praise you, but it’s obvious you’ve only gotten this far thanks to Eric Morris shielding you! You think you can do whatever you want here at the institute!”

After his tirade, Garth turned to Abner Young, his tone grave. “Mr. Young, I say we act according to the institute’s code and dismiss her immediately. Otherwise, how can we expect anyone here to trust leadership?”

It sounded like a righteous demand, but in truth, he was pressuring Abner Young to make a quick decision and punish Camila.
