Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 739

The bodyguard looked just as confused as everyone else.

He reported honestly to Dennis Williams, “Nothing unusual happened at the preschool today. Lillian went to class just like she always does.”

A deep furrow appeared between Dennis’s brows. He knew Lillian well—if nothing had happened, she wouldn’t be acting this way.

Camila Davis pulled out her phone, intending to message Lillian’s teacher directly. After all, the teachers tended to know more about what went on with the kids.

That’s when she noticed she’d missed a message from the teacher earlier that afternoon.

The message read: “Sorry, Ms. Davis. Today, a little boy and his parent came by to ask about enrollment. The child was a bit mischievous and ran off when no one was looking—he accidentally bumped into Lillian. From the security footage, it seems the two kids said something to each other. The boy didn’t hurt Lillian, but she did seem pretty shaken up. I apologize for our oversight. Please extend my apologies to Mr. Williams as well.”

Camila’s heart sank as she finished reading.

“Dennis!” she called, waving him over and handing him the phone to read the teacher’s message.

The bodyguard, listening in, suddenly remembered, “Actually, there was a kid on the playground who wasn’t in uniform. There were a lot of children playing together, so we didn’t think much of it at the time. The teachers showed up right after.”

Dennis’s frown deepened. “Are you sure that kid didn’t lay a hand on Lillian?”

The bodyguard nodded firmly. “Absolutely. If anyone had tried to hurt her, we would have stepped in immediately to protect Lillian.”

Dennis trusted his bodyguard. Still, he could sense that the real issue had something to do with that other child.

He gently lifted Lillian onto his lap and spoke softly to her, “Sweetheart, did that little boy say anything mean to you at school today? Did he say something that made you feel bad?”

That finally seemed to touch a nerve. Lillian’s small body trembled, her lips quivering as she tugged at Dennis’s shirt. Tears welled in her eyes, her tiny voice brimming with hurt.

“It was that mean boy. He always called me stupid before, and today he was mean again… He said it’s my fault—and Mommy’s—that he doesn’t have a dad.”

Camila’s face went pale with anger as she heard those words.

Who could say something so cruel? Could it be Sandra Taylor’s son? But how would they have come all the way here—to Cabinda—and even pick Lillian’s preschool?
