She had always known what Benjamin Torres wanted—for the Torres family to someday reclaim their place among the elite.
The Roberts family was his chosen stepping stone.
That was why she had gone out of her way to please Lavinia Roberts all this time.
If Lavinia Roberts ever took notice of her, and the Torres family’s standing improved, she would be seen as the one who made it happen.
Then, being with Benjamin Torres would be the most natural thing in the world.
But now, all her efforts had been ruined—because of Camila Davis.
Everything she’d done had gone up in smoke, all thanks to her.
That was exactly why Harper Thompson couldn’t swallow her anger today, and why she’d lashed out at Camila Davis.
At least Benjamin Torres was more clear-headed.
Unlike Harper, he didn’t blame Camila Davis for what had happened.
Facing Harper’s fury, he spoke calmly, “Harper, that’s enough. What happened with Lavinia isn’t Camila’s fault.
I’ve looked into the whole thing.
This time, Lavinia really was in the wrong, and her injury was an accident.
I know you mean well, but you shouldn’t take it out on Camila.
Let’s drop it, and don’t bring it up again.”
He turned to Camila Davis and offered a quiet apology. “I’m sorry you got dragged into this, Camila. Don’t take Harper’s words to heart.”
Harper stared at him, stunned.
After everything she’d done for him—she’d only picked a fight with Camila Davis because she cared about him.
And now?
Not only was he not on her side, he was actually defending Camila Davis.
He made her look like nothing more than a jealous troublemaker.
Harper’s whole body trembled with anger. She snapped, “Benjamin, don’t you care about your own family anymore?”
Benjamin just frowned and replied, “Harper, the Torres family’s business has nothing to do with you—stop getting involved.
And stay out of things with the Roberts family, too.”
“You…!”
Harper was beside herself, torn between disbelief and heartache, her gaze burning with resentment toward Camila Davis.
How could she not see it now—how special Benjamin was with Camila?
But why?
She’d stood by Benjamin for years, given so much, and he’d never once looked at her that way.
Camila Davis had barely known him, and already he treated her differently.
Jealousy flared inside Harper, so hot it almost hurt. She glared at Camila Davis as if she could cut her with her eyes.
Benjamin ignored Harper’s outburst and turned back to Camila. “Let’s get to work. We still have tasks to finish today.”
“Alright.”
Camila nodded coolly and walked away, not sparing them another glance.
Benjamin watched her go, his eyes darkening with emotion.
