He lifted his hand, gently wiping away the tear clinging to the corner of her eye.
Then, with a mix of exasperation and indulgence, he murmured, “Stupid Camila, why do you always let your mind run wild?”
“Haven’t I told you before? Just leave everything to me, okay? All you need to do is trust me.”
He paused, his eyes softening. “I never explained this before, but now you deserve to know. The moment I brought you to Cabinda, I’d already thought it all through—about the closed research, the time we might be apart... I was always planning further ahead than you realized.”
“When it came to this project, I put things in place long ago. NextGen Technologies and the institute have a deep partnership—most of their medical equipment actually comes from us. When I signed the contracts, I made sure there was a clause: NextGen Technologies can request access at any time to maintain or service the devices.”
He smiled, his thumb brushing lightly against her cheek. “Which means, even if you’re working in isolation, I can visit you. I could even stay inside with you if I needed to—I fought for that, for us.”
“So, you see, there’s never been any real risk of us being separated. And if you’re ever truly called in for a long-term project... I’ll probably be right there with you. Do you believe me?”
Camila stared at him, stunned, the last tear trembling on her lashes, caught between falling and staying put. She looked adorably lost.
So… had she been worrying for nothing?
Dennis caught the look of surprise on her face and couldn’t help but chuckle. “And one more thing. I’ve told you this before: being with me doesn’t mean you have to give up anything you love. Go after what you want, chase your ambitions, pursue your dreams. Don’t let family obligations hold you back because of me. Lillian and I have everything we need—there’s staff to look after us, and a doctor on call for every little sniffle. You don’t have to worry.”
