Camila Davis simply smiled and said nothing.
But only she knew that beneath her cheerful exterior, her heart was far heavier than she let on.
Truth be told, she had never imagined herself facing something like this before.
Pushing the boundaries in her field of research had always been her goal.
If the day ever came when she had the chance to achieve that, she wouldn’t hesitate—she couldn’t bear to give it up.
She’d made that promise to her mentor, and to herself; it was the standard she held herself to.
But just as Larry Adams had pointed out—
If she really did take part in that project, the two of them would be apart for a long time.
Would their relationship survive that kind of distance?
Camila wasn’t sure.
With these thoughts weighing on her, even the lively banter between Larry and Sarah couldn’t lift her spirits. She kept eating, but the food tasted like nothing.
Halfway through the meal, she excused herself to the restroom.
She wasn’t gone long before Sarah followed her in.
Camila turned at the sound of the door and saw Sarah already looking her up and down. “You’ve been a million miles away all night,” Sarah said. “Is it something Larry said? Did he shake your confidence?”
Camila hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “A little, yeah.”
She didn’t want to hide anything from Sarah.
Sarah was her best friend, and honestly, if she couldn’t talk to her, she didn’t know who she could talk to.
Sarah, realizing she’d guessed right, let out a sigh. “Girl, why are you overthinking this?”
“We only get one life. Enjoy it while you can. Nobody knows what the future holds, right? So make the most of what’s in front of you. When you have time, be with him, love him. Isn’t that enough?”
Camila stayed silent, eyes lowered, lost in thought.
Sarah’s voice was gentle but persistent, “And listen, I really believe if you love someone, you can get through anything. Love moves mountains, right?”
“My Camila is unstoppable—no way you’re letting a little thing like time defeat you.”
That finally coaxed a real smile out of Camila.
Only Sarah could be this ridiculously optimistic.
But she wasn’t wrong.
Why was she torturing herself, worrying about something that hadn’t even happened yet? All she was doing was making herself miserable twice over.
