Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 689

Camila Davis listened, and it all became clear.

This was about the two of them—again.

The man in front of her was always planning, always scheming, always working to bring them closer together. Every promise he’d ever made, he was proving with action, not just empty words. He was always trying to ease her worries, making sure she had nothing to fear.

Camila looked at him helplessly and asked, “So… you really don’t want me to do anything at all?”

Dennis Williams frowned at that and lightly tapped her forehead. “Who said that? Who was it, just last night, staying up late to make medicine for my grandfather? Camila, you’re trying too. Don’t sell yourself short, okay?”

He finished by brushing a quick kiss against her lips.

Camila pressed her lips together where he’d kissed her, her heart growing soft. How could she say anything more after that?

Still, she wasn’t careless. There was a lingering anxiety in her chest.

“Meeting your Uncle Douglas and Aunt Charlotte today… it all felt a bit rushed. I should prepare a proper gift next time, something to leave a better impression.”

Fiddling with the chain of Dennis’s glasses as it hung across his chest, she wound it around her finger absentmindedly and asked, “What do your Uncle Douglas and Aunt Charlotte like? And Audrey, too? Tell me?”

Dennis caught her hand before it could cause more mischief, pressing her knuckles to his lips. “Don’t worry about it. I can help you pick something out.”

But Camila shook her head, refusing. “No, gifts for your family have to come from the heart. Let me handle it—I just need you to tell me what they like.”

Seeing how serious she was, Dennis relented. “Alright, I’ll tell you.”

He went over his family’s preferences in detail, and Camila nodded along, occasionally jotting notes in her phone’s memo app.

The two of them stood there, talking quietly in each other’s arms.

Outside the sunroom, Audrey Williams had just seen Walter Wilson off. As she passed by, she caught sight of their familiar silhouettes inside and couldn’t resist peeking through the door, curiosity getting the better of her.

Charlotte Kelly noticed her daughter sneaking around and couldn’t help but chuckle. She stepped up and whispered, “Come on, don’t disturb your brother.”

Audrey waved her off. “Just a minute! I want to see what Jordan is like when he’s in love—I’ve never seen it before. Aren’t you even a little curious?”
