Nathan Gates waited quietly by the side, letting Jordan finish venting before he finally spoke up. “It’s not completely their fault. Robert’s always been kind of a weirdo anyway. We’re getting nowhere here, and the International AI Expo is coming up soon. Maybe we should head back and deal with that first?”
Nathan was just being practical. He’d watched Mr. Smith try every trick in the book to reach Camila Davis and Lillian, but it was useless. Dennis Williams had his defenses locked up tight, not even a crack to slip through.
All those failed attempts had left Jordan feeling crushed, and his moods were all over the place. But Nathan could see it clearly: Camila wasn’t coming back. No matter how much his boss obsessed over it, nothing good would come of it.
Whether it was for work or just out of common sense, Nathan’s only thought now was to get Jordan to go home.
Jordan took a deep breath, trying to get himself under control, thinking through what mattered most right now. After what felt like forever, he finally told Nathan, “Book the tickets.”
“Got it.” Nathan answered right away, feeling a huge sense of relief.
He snagged seats on a flight that night, and Jordan headed straight back to Harrisburg.
Almost the moment he left, Dennis Williams got word from Aaron. As soon as they confirmed that the troublemaker was gone, Dennis picked up the phone and called Lillian in Harrisburg. “Jordan Smith’s gone back. He’s probably there for the AI Expo. You and Walter need to find a way to keep him busy in Harrisburg. Tie him up with work, keep him running around, and make sure he doesn’t have time to come here. I don’t want him showing up in Cabinda again.”
He said it was because Jordan was an eyesore, but the truth was, he just didn’t want him bothering Camila and Lillian.
Audrey got the message right away. “Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered. Just focus on taking care of Camila. I promise he won’t come back and bug you guys!”
Dennis was happy with Lillian’s answer. While he had her on the phone, he asked, “I had Kyle Garcia bring your medicine. Did you get it?”
Audrey answered sweetly, “Yeah, I got it.”
“Good. Take care of yourself.”
The siblings were just chatting when Audrey suddenly heard coughing through the phone. It was Camila. “Is Camila okay?”
Dennis’s voice was instantly anxious. “I need to check on her. I’ll call you later.” He hung up in a hurry, rushing to Camila’s side.
He knelt beside her, gently patting her back, his eyes full of worry. “Are you feeling sick again?”
Camila caught her breath and quickly shook her head. “No, I just swallowed wrong. Don’t worry, I’m fine.”
Lately, she’d been going to the research institute every day to keep track of her health data. At home, her parents and Dennis had even found her a nutritionist to help her recover. Honestly, she was doing pretty well.
“Okay.” Camila nodded and headed into the bathroom.
She thought it would be just another ordinary night. But as she bent over the sink to wash her face, her nose started to itch. Something felt off, and before she could react, blood began to drip from her nose.
Bright red drops spattered into the sink, making Camila jump. She grabbed some tissues, wiping it away, her heart pounding.
What’s going on?
She was a doctor. She knew nosebleeds like this didn’t just happen for no reason. She hadn’t hurt herself. There were no other symptoms.
The only explanation was the medication.
But this had never happened before. This was the first time.
Could her condition be getting worse?
