Iris’s smile froze in place. She hadn’t expected Walter to admit, right there in front of everyone, that the flowers were for Audrey. They weren’t even together. Didn’t he care that people might get the wrong idea?
She clenched her fists behind her back, but kept her voice light. “Wow, so you’re making a bouquet for someone? Since we’re all here, do we get one too? Seems only fair if we’re watching.”
No way was she going to let those flowers be something special just for Audrey.
Walter glanced at her, but before he could say a word, Audrey jumped in first. “No way. A real gift isn’t something you hand out to everyone. It’s supposed to be one-of-a-kind, right, Walter? I’ve never had the same gift as anybody else.”
Most people might not get what Audrey meant, or they’d think she was lying. But Walter knew she was telling the truth. Audrey was the Williams family’s little princess. If she wanted the stars, someone would probably try to get them for her. Of course her gifts were always unique.
He nodded. “Yeah. Just for you.”
It made no sense for Audrey to come all this way and feel left out. Walter had zero intention of letting that happen.
Audrey’s whole face lit up. “Thank you, Walter. You’re the sweetest.”
Walter gave her a warm smile in return.
Watching them, Iris almost lost her grip on her fake smile. She couldn’t hide how upset she was. Why did Audrey get to be the only special one to Walter? They’d barely known each other that long. Was their bond already deeper than the one he had with his old friends?
Amy, standing behind Iris, couldn’t hold back. “Ms. Williams, aren’t you a little full of yourself? How can you just take Mr. Wilson’s gift for yourself? And really, never gotten the same gift as anyone else? Isn’t that a bit much?”
Her words dripped with sarcasm, her eyes practically saying, Who do you think you are, some kind of royal or billionaire heiress?
Audrey just looked at her, all innocence. “Why not? Walter was planning to give me something anyway. If you hadn’t shown up, it would still be just for me. Besides, you can’t just hand out flowers to anyone. You guys are old friends, not a couple.”
To stop Iris from ruining everyone’s mood, Harden spoke up. “Alright, let’s get out of the greenhouse and give Walter some space. We can wait in the lounge.”
Everyone started to file out, but Iris stayed put, refusing to move. She hated the idea of leaving Walter and Audrey alone together.
Harden noticed. He looked right at her this time. “Iris, if you don’t want to stay, let’s just go. No need to bother Mr. and Mrs. Wilson.”
There was a warning hidden in his words. Iris hated it, but she knew she couldn’t win this one. If she left, she’d have even less chance to be around Walter.
She bit her lip and finally left the greenhouse, Amy trailing behind her.
Harden seemed satisfied. Before leaving, he turned back and called out, “Walter, take your time. No rush.”
