Next to the stage, there was a row of exhibition booths. It wasn't anything huge, but it was just right for what they needed.
“We invited some of the main clubs, but honestly, a lot of other students were curious about the event too,” Audrey explained as she led Walter around. “During rehearsals, people kept stopping by to watch. Since we're all from the same school, it didn't seem fair to leave anyone out. So the university made an announcement a few days ago, inviting everyone who was interested to set up a booth. They can sell crafts or whatever, as long as it has something to do with traditional or cultural themes. The list of participants is finalized now…”
Walter listened as Audrey filled him in on every detail. He knew all of this was her doing. The school gave support, sure, but the whole plan was Audrey's from start to finish. He couldn't help but be impressed by how smoothly she pulled everything together in such a short time.
“You’re amazing. I definitely underestimated you before.”
Audrey looked up at him, her eyes bright with pride. “Obviously. I trained under my brother, you know. There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Mr. Wilson.”
She looked so cute with that little proud smirk. Walter grinned and nodded. “You’re right. But I hope to find out… little by little.”
He said it without thinking, but Audrey took his words to heart. She figured he really meant he wanted to get to know her, and her heart skipped a beat.
Looking over at the staff still working nearby, Audrey turned back to Walter. “It’s Christmas Eve, so it looks like we’ll be here tonight. I still need to check a few things with the school contact and the staff. Do you have anything else going on? If not, will you stay and keep me company?”
She really hoped he’d say yes. If he did, she’d finally get to show him the little surprise she had planned for him.
Walter hesitated for a second. “I don’t have anything else…” He was thinking it would be nice to stay with her. She’d been handling everything on her own lately since his work kept him busy.
Just as he was about to say more, his phone started ringing. He glanced down and saw Harden’s name on the screen.
He shot Audrey an apologetic look. “I need to grab this.”
“Go ahead,” she said with a nod. She could hear Harden’s excited voice right away.
“Walter! What are you doing? Are you done yet? Come celebrate Christmas Eve with us!”
Usually, their group of friends always spent the holiday together. Harden was calling to get Walter to join them, but this time, Walter surprised him.
Walter, for once, told the truth. “She and Audrey made plans.”
A few days ago, Audrey had gone over to his family’s place to help decorate the Christmas tree. She had the same taste as his mom, and together they made the tree look stunning. His mom got so into it that she decided they’d celebrate at home this year and even invited Audrey to join them. Audrey, not wanting to be alone, happily accepted.
“Ohhh, I get it now,” Harden said, sounding impressed. “So Ms. Williams already met the family? Nice!”
Walter rolled his eyes. “What are you talking about?”
“Nothing, nothing!” Harden laughed. “Alright, we won’t bother you then!” As Walter’s friend, he was happy to give them some space.
Harden hung up fast. His friends crowded around him, asking, “What did Walter say? Is he coming?”
Iris was right there, watching Harden closely, clearly hoping for some news.
