Audrey glanced over and saw that everything was piled up in the corner of the living room.
She set down her glass, already excited, and went over to start moving things. The Christmas tree was real though, and it turned out to be heavier than she expected. She tried lifting it but barely managed to budge it.
Still, Audrey didn’t get discouraged. Grinning, she called out, “Walter, can you help me out here?”
Walter didn’t hesitate. He rolled up his sleeves and came over to give her a hand with the tree.
Audrey stepped aside, watching him work. The light from the wall lamps highlighted his sharp features and made his profile stand out even more. She couldn’t help but stare. Every time he shifted the tree, the muscles in his arms flexed, making him look even stronger.
Honestly, Audrey couldn’t be more pleased. Walter was just… perfect. There wasn’t a single thing about him she could find fault with.
In no time, Walter got the tree set up exactly where she wanted, right next to the grand piano by the big windows.
“Is this good?” he asked, glancing back at her.
“Perfect! Absolutely perfect!” Audrey nodded quickly and hurried off to get the decorations.
Inside the box were really nice string lights and a bunch of different ornaments—tiny pinecones, little gift boxes, stars, snowflakes. All of it just screamed Christmas.
Walter took one look and raised an eyebrow. “This looks like a lot of work.”
“It looks complicated but it’s honestly not that bad. Want to try? Decorating your own Christmas tree is actually really satisfying.” Audrey grinned, inviting him to join her.
Walter looked at her, then at the bare tree. Before he could answer, Audrey marched over, took his arm, and coaxed him with a playful voice. “Come on. You’re not busy with anything else.”
Walter let out a helpless sigh and agreed.
They both sat cross-legged on the soft rug and started decorating. To be fair, Walter had no idea where to start. He kept staring at the ornaments, clearly confused. Audrey found it adorable and showed him how to hang each one while she worked.
Walter caught on fast. With both of them working, things went way quicker than if she’d been alone. Before long, the bottom half of the tree was covered in ornaments.
They got so into it that neither of them heard the front door open.
Leda and Palmer hardly ever visited their son’s place. They usually only dropped by if they happened to be nearby. Tonight, after meeting up with some old friends and having a few drinks, they figured they might as well stay over.
“We were out with some friends nearby, so we decided to stay here tonight.” She was talking to Walter, but her eyes were locked on Audrey. There was a spark of curiosity in her voice as she asked, “And who is this young lady?”
Audrey knew she couldn’t just stand there awkwardly. She got up, walked over, and greeted them politely.
She had delicate features, gentle eyes, and her smile was as sweet as could be. “Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Davis. I’m Audrey Williams. When I was in Cabinda, my mom mentioned you both. I didn’t expect you to look so young in person. Mrs. Davis, your skin is amazing. Honestly, you look more like Walter’s sister than his mom.”
Leda finally put it together. This was the Audrey Williams from NextGen Technologies.
No woman could resist a compliment, especially as she got older. Leda’s whole face lit up at Audrey’s words.
She laughed warmly. “So you’re Audrey. You have such a sweet way with words. Definitely more charming than my quiet son.”
Palmer wasn’t as expressive as his wife. He glanced at the nearly finished tree and asked, “So, what were you two working on when we came in?”
Audrey smiled and explained, “We’re decorating the Christmas tree. We saw some beautiful ones while we were out shopping and ended up each buying one. Walter said he didn’t know how to decorate, so I came over to help.”
