Iris acted like she hadn’t heard the rejection at all. She grinned. “What’s inconvenient? We’re both girls. Audrey, if you need anything, just let me know. Walter’s always busy with work, so he might not always be there for you.”

She was clearly trying to get closer, playing the part of a sweet friend.

Audrey caught on right away. She didn’t call her out, just kept smiling. “Oh, that’s alright. Walter already promised to spend the evening with me. He told me to wait until he finished up. Hmm, it’s already getting late. Walter, are we leaving now?”

She turned to look at Walter, and there was an easy comfort between them that was hard to miss.

Iris’s smile almost slipped. Did she just hear that right? Audrey called him Walter, just like that? And he let her? That kind of nickname definitely meant something more was going on.

Iris stared at Walter, searching his face for any clues, but he just nodded in agreement. “Yes, I already promised Audrey. Tonight’s her night. If it’s about work, talk to Aiden tomorrow and we’ll set something up.”

He glanced at Audrey, giving her the signal to go. Audrey naturally walked to his side.

Iris had no choice but to act like she didn’t mind. “Alright, let’s just pick another time.”

All three of them went downstairs together. Audrey felt like she was floating, excited about dinner and the chance to finally have Walter to herself.

But just as they were leaving The Smith Group, Iris somehow managed to trip on the steps.

“Ah…”

She let out a sharp cry, making Walter and Audrey stop in their tracks.

“It hurts so much…”

Iris clutched her ankle, eyes watery with pain. She really looked like she couldn’t stand.

As soon as Walter looked over, she gazed at him pitifully. “Walter, I think I twisted my ankle. I can’t get up. Can you take me to the hospital?”

Her voice trembled, and anyone listening would’ve felt sorry for her.

But Audrey saw right through it. She was surprised Iris would go this far, just to ruin one dinner. Clearly, she’d underestimated her.
