Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1165

Aaron leaned back and said, “Funny thing is, Ms. Williams happened to need you for something. She called your phone, and you must’ve hit the answer button by accident. The whole conversation got recorded.”

“No way!” Cynthia blurted out. There was just no way the universe could line up like that. But then she remembered Audrey borrowing her phone that day. Had Audrey messed with it somehow? Cynthia had checked afterward, but nothing seemed off.

While she was still trying to figure it out, Nicholas glared at her, his voice sharp. “Are you really this dense? You still don’t get it? He started setting the trap when he was still overseas. Back then, he probably didn’t even know who was behind it all. This is all because of you!”

Nicholas’s words hit her hard. Suddenly, it all made sense. From the moment she heard about Camila’s accident, everything she’d seen had been staged—every single bit of it. Camila’s supposed accident. Larry, Sarah, and Audrey rushing abroad. Dennis coming home, looking all heartbroken. Audrey in the hospital. It was all a show. None of it was real.

Cynthia’s eyes filled with tears as she stared at Dennis. “Audrey’s hospital stay… that was fake, wasn’t it?” Her voice shook. “You set us up from the start. You were just waiting for us to fall for it.”

She wasn’t even asking anymore. She knew.

“But I don’t get it,” she whispered, feeling lost and defeated. “Where did I mess up? I was so careful around Audrey. I never slipped.”

Aaron saw how hard she was struggling and decided to throw her a bone. “You were too impatient. The second Ms. Davis’s mom was hospitalized, you ran straight to the hospital to ‘accidentally’ run into everyone and check if it was true. And you underestimated Ms. Williams. Did you really think everyone is as clueless as you are?”

With every word, Cynthia’s face grew paler. She finally saw the truth. She’d always thought Audrey was just a sweet little rich girl, raised in a bubble, soft and harmless. But Audrey was way smarter than she let on. She’d seen right through Cynthia from the start but chose to play along, teaming up with Dennis and the others to keep her in the dark.

Cynthia let out a crazed, bitter laugh. “God, I’m such an idiot. I actually trusted her, just a clueless little girl.”

She should’ve known. Audrey had always sided with Camila. Why would she suddenly want Cynthia to end up with her brother? If Audrey had really thought Cynthia was good for him, would Camila even be in the picture?

The officer held her back, and Cynthia could only watch as Dennis gently shielded Camila. That tenderness—she’d wanted it for years and never gotten it. Just like that, he was protecting Camila.

Cynthia lost it. Her eyes were wild as she shouted, “Dennis Williams, you can’t do this! Everything I did, I did for you! I only made mistakes because I loved you! After all these years, how can you just throw me away like this?”

If it wasn’t for him, she thought, none of this would have happened.

Dennis didn’t even flinch. His voice was cold, completely detached. “Ms. Lee, there’s never been anything between us. You acted out of selfishness, broke the law, and tried to hurt someone. Now you’re going to have to face the consequences.”

He wasn’t wrong. Even though they’d both grown up in Cabinda’s elite circles, they’d barely interacted. Their only real connection was that their families knew each other. After Dennis left Cabinda, he’d only seen Cynthia a handful of times, if that.
