Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1163

Hazel Wood was already awake when Cynthia walked in. She looked terrible, her skin pale and her cheeks sunken, as if all the life had drained right out of her.

As soon as she saw Cynthia, Hazel pushed herself upright, her desperation showing. “What’s going on with the family? Where’s your father? Did he really bring those illegitimate kids home? And that woman Ines, is she back too?”

Cynthia didn’t want to get into it. “Don’t ask, Mom. The doctor says you need to rest.”

“Rest? How am I supposed to rest when our whole family is falling apart? Are you really going to keep hiding things from me?”

Hazel’s voice pitched up, turning sharp and wild. She was on the verge of losing it when the hospital room door swung open, cutting her off.

The police walked in, and Cynthia went rigid.

“We’ve received a report,” one of the officers said. “Hazel Wood, Cynthia Lee, and Nicholas Lee are suspects in a case involving hiring someone to kidnap and murder. We need you to come to the police station with us.”

The words landed like a punch. Cynthia and Hazel were stunned.

“What kidnapping? What murder? We didn’t do anything!” they protested together.

“Officer, this has to be a misunderstanding!”

They tried to brush it off, but the officer’s face stayed serious. “There’s no point in denying it. We have all the evidence. Last month, the three of you contacted an overseas hitman organization through illegal channels and arranged for Ms. Davis to be kidnapped. Your accomplices, Sandra Taylor and Lavinia Roberts, have already confessed. Your informant, Patton, has been caught too. Now all that’s left... is you.”

“What?” Cynthia’s heart dropped. The color drained from her face. “How could this happen…”

Sandra and Lavinia had told her Camila Davis was dead, that they’d finished her off. Why would they confess now? And Patton—when did he get caught? Why hadn’t she heard anything?

Her mind spun with questions, but she just stood there, frozen. The police didn’t give them time to process, moving to take them away. Hazel, overwhelmed, gasped for breath and fainted again.

Both mother and daughter were taken straight to the police station. When Cynthia walked inside, she was stunned to see her father already there, a lawyer at his side. He had just been summoned and thought it was about business, even asking his lawyer if he could get out on bail.

Their eyes went wide as the truth started to sink in.

“It was you!” Nicholas shot up from his seat, rage burning in his eyes. “Dennis Williams, are you the one behind everything that’s happened to us lately?”

Dennis didn’t answer. He had no intention of wasting words on them. Instead, Aaron spoke up. “Nicholas, you might want to think before you talk. This is a police station. Without evidence, anything you say could just be proof you’re slandering Dennis.”

Nicholas was furious, almost losing control. “It had to be you! Who else would dare mess with the Lee Group like this?”

Aaron just smiled, calm as ever. “If you mean the evidence of your crimes, then yeah, we helped with that. But as for the mistress and those illegitimate kids, don’t blame us. That was your own precious sons leaking the truth.”

“No way!” Nicholas snapped back without even thinking. His sons had always followed his lead. The Lee Group was supposed to be theirs someday. Why would they ruin that now?

Aaron caught the look of disbelief on his face and gave a little laugh. “Why would I lie? If you don’t believe me, go ask them yourself.”
