When Aaron mentioned Lavinia Roberts, the head of the Roberts family looked like he’d just been slapped. His face twisted in shock and anger. “Lavinia again? Seriously?”
He barely had time to get angry before he swung around to Aaron, his voice almost pleading. “Aaron, you’ve got it all wrong. After we got that first warning, we cut Lavinia off. We haven’t spoken to her since. If you don’t believe me, go ahead, send someone to check it out yourself.”
The rest of the family quickly jumped in, all trying to clear their name.
“He’s telling the truth, Aaron. You’re blaming us for nothing. We don’t even know what Lavinia’s up to anymore.”
“She’s been out of our lives for ages! Whatever trouble she’s in now, that’s on her. The rest of us have nothing to do with it.”
“Seriously, look into it. If you find anyone here secretly helping her, you won’t have to get your hands dirty. We’ll handle it ourselves, right in front of you.”
They all sounded honest, their anxiety practically hanging in the air. Aaron watched them, picking up on the nerves and the urgency—they didn’t seem like they were faking it.
The truth was, Aaron hadn’t come to punish the Roberts family. He was there to put them on notice, to remind them of who was in charge. Once he saw his warning had landed, he said, “Alright. I’ll give you another chance. I’ll have my people look into everything. If I find out you’ve been helping her... don’t expect any mercy.”
“Of course! We’d never help her!” The whole family rushed to reassure him.
Aaron left after that. He’d already sent people to investigate behind the scenes anyway. It turned out the family was telling the truth—after Lavinia was kicked out, she’d cut all ties. The Roberts family had enough problems of their own and plenty of resentment toward Lavinia. It was her reckless behavior that got them into this mess. If anything, they’d be more likely to turn her in than cover for her.
Back at headquarters, Aaron reported everything to Dennis Williams.
Dennis’s eyes turned icy, his expression unreadable. “So Lavinia has someone else backing her up?”
Aaron nodded. “It looks that way. The Roberts family isn’t involved, and there’s no way she could pull this off by herself.”
Dennis cut straight to the point. “Find her. If she’s working with Sandra Taylor, then Sandra or even Brown might know where she is.”
Aaron got the message and sent his team to question Sandra Taylor again.
Patton didn’t answer her questions. “No time to explain. Just go. If you get caught, I can’t do anything for you.”
His serious tone got through to her. Still confused, Lavinia packed up and hurried out of the hotel.
As soon as he hung up, Patton turned around and went to report to Cynthia Lee.
When Cynthia heard that Sandra had probably been caught, she nearly lost it. She slammed her glass down so hard it shattered. “Those two idiots! Who told them to go overseas? Did they want everyone to know they were targeting Camila Davis?”
Back when Dennis Williams and Camila Davis had just left the country, Cynthia was already on edge. Her father pulled every string he had, spent a fortune, and finally found out they’d gone to Kaston. The idea of Dennis taking Camila on vacation, treating her to the happiness she’d always wanted for herself, drove Cynthia wild with jealousy.
That’s when she came up with a new plan. She got in touch with Red Spider and hired them to take out Camila Davis. She made sure not to use her own name—instead, she set everything up under Sandra Taylor’s.
Just a few days ago, she’d gotten word that the job was done. If the plan had already worked, why did Sandra have to run off to Kaston herself?
