“Dennis, you really came for me?”
The second Dennis Williams saw her, all the tension in his chest disappeared. He opened his arms and pulled her into a solid hug, his eyes full of worry. “Camila, are you alright? Did they hurt you at all?”
Camila held onto his neck, grinning. “I’m fine. Really, they didn’t lay a finger on me. Everything’s good.”
She had honestly thought she’d have to wait longer to see him. But he was here. He didn’t let her down.
Still, Dennis wasn’t totally convinced. He couldn’t believe anyone could get kidnapped and then act like it was no big deal. He looked her up and down, only relaxing when he was sure she was really okay. Then he hugged her even tighter.
“I’m just glad you’re safe.”
That feeling of relief, of getting her back, melted away all the anxiety that had been eating at him.
RedFox, though, was having a much worse day. BlackScorpion and SilverWolf grabbed him and roughed him up.
“Look at the mess you made,” BlackScorpion snapped, jaw clenched. “You almost got us killed!”
RedFox yelped and tried to dodge the blows, totally lost. “Boss, SilverWolf, what’s going on? Can you at least tell me what I did before you beat me up? Seriously, what happened?”
Before he could get another word in, Dennis’s guys stormed over and shoved guns in his face.
RedFox’s crew froze, scrambling for weapons, but all they had were half-eaten kebabs and empty beer bottles. The whole scene was painfully awkward.
RedFox looked around, then focused on BlackScorpion, face full of confusion. “Can someone please explain what’s happening?”
BlackScorpion looked like he was about to explode. “I should ask you that! Who did you even kidnap? Do you realize you almost got our whole base wiped out?”
Aaron snorted. “Just your original plan is enough to get you killed a hundred times over. But since you didn’t actually hurt Mrs. Smith, we’ll give you a chance to make things right. Start talking. Why’d you kidnap her and who’s behind it? We want the whole story, no holding back.”
RedFox nodded so fast his head nearly fell off. “Of course! I was planning on letting Ms. Davis go anyway! She fixed my leg, she basically saved my life! Ask whatever you want, I’ll tell you everything!”
His sudden honesty left both Mr. Byron and Aaron speechless. Was this really the Red Spider they’d heard about? Weren’t organizations like this supposed to be all about keeping secrets?
Dennis just stared at RedFox, holding Camila close like she was the most precious thing in the world. Anyone could see how much she meant to him.
BlackScorpion wiped sweat from his forehead, silently grateful that Camila was unharmed. If things had gone any other way, that scary guy would have torn their whole group apart.
BlackScorpion forced a smile and tried to smooth things over. “Why don’t we all go inside and talk?”
SilverWolf jumped in, laughing nervously. “Yeah, it’s windy out here. Let’s head inside and sort this out.”
