While Camila was resting, Dennis called his grandfather and filled him in on everything that had happened. He already had people looking into where the drug came from, but deep down he knew their best shot at helping Camila would be with his grandfather.
Old Mr. Williams was furious. Even through the phone, Dennis could hear him pacing around. “Those Smith family monsters, how could they do this to Camila? They’re absolutely disgusting!” His anger spilled out for several minutes, but eventually he managed to calm down, knowing it wouldn’t help Camila. After a moment, he said, “I’ll get everything ready here. Just bring her back as soon as you can.”
“Okay,” Dennis replied. Hearing those words gave him a bit of comfort.
They had set out in the morning, and by the time they reached Cabinda, it was already dark. Dennis took Camila straight to the research institute connected to the medical school. Old Mr. Williams, Kyle Garcia, and even Jarvis Peters were waiting outside.
Jarvis had originally come to talk medical theory with the old master, but when he heard about Camila, he insisted on staying to help. As soon as Dennis got out of the car holding Camila, everyone rushed over.
Jarvis looked Camila over, worry written all over his face. “How’s she doing? Is she alright?”
Dennis answered honestly. “The doctor gave her something on the way here, so she’s sleeping now. Is everything ready?”
Jarvis nodded. “Yeah, don’t worry. We started prepping as soon as you called. We’re just waiting for you.”
Old Mr. Williams hadn’t stopped frowning since they arrived. He checked Camila’s pulse, but whatever he found didn’t seem to put him at ease. He turned to Dennis and said, “Take her into the medical room and do a full examination.”
“Got it,” Dennis replied.
Jarvis stepped aside to clear the way, and they all moved quickly inside. Once Camila was settled, Dennis was asked to wait outside. More than half an hour later, the tests were done and the results came in. They matched what the Harrisburg hospital had already found, but the institute’s report was much more detailed.
He understood Lillian well. Even though she had made progress with her autism, she was still more sensitive than most kids. If she found out her mom got hurt looking for her, she’d be devastated.
Dennis nodded right away. “I’ll handle it, don’t worry. Just please do everything you can for Camila. Anything you need, just tell me.”
Old Mr. Williams shot him a look. “I’d heal her even if you didn’t ask. She’s my only apprentice. Of course I’ll do everything I can.” He was all action, already planning out the treatment in his mind. He quickly called Jarvis over to help.
With Camila still sleeping, Dennis stepped outside to see Aaron, who looked just as anxious. Aaron understood how much Ms. Davis meant to his boss, and he’d been hoping and praying that she’d be alright the whole way there.
When he saw the grim look on Dennis’s face, he knew things inside were worse than any of them had hoped.
