Chapter 699 Carrying Out the Plan
Being afraid the fact would be too harsh a blow to Burton, Lucia didn't begin discussing her experience in the afternoon
with August until Burton had left. Seeing August's poker face as though the matter had produced no ripple in his heart,
Lucia couldn't help urging, "I know you have your concern over the relationship between Paula and Paul. But I just can't
sit by and watch!"
"I didn't say I won't help." He gave Lucia a calm glance. "But the situation is tougher than I expected." Though not as
rich as Adams family, the Thomas family at least had its exalted position in Austos City, and the security system of their
house wouldn't go with many loopholes. It was definitely not an easy task to rescue Paula.
But August knew it was a mission he had to take, either for the sake of Lucia or Burton. "Are you sure you are going to
stand on Paula's side?" August reminded Lucia with a noncommittal look. "Mind you, that is equivalent to a declaration
of war against Paul, and you two..."
"Then just declare the war!" Lucia confirmed with great resolution. "Paul is no long who I knew. What I care about now
is only my friendship with Paula, definitely not with him." What Paul had committed was unforgivable in Lucia's eyes,
though he had done her many favors too, which she decided to repay in other means instead of tolerating his
misdoings.
Having wearing a scowl on his face for a whole day, August finally appeared relieved now. He went up to Lucia slowly and
said lightly, "I'm glad that you are not blinded by something."
Being blinded? Lucia paused and gave him a questioning stare until it finally dawned on her what he meant. Lucia then
looked at August with resignation, "You've got your wife and kids with you now. How come you are still insecure?"
August didn't reply to that question. Instead, he cleared his throat and was about to call Burton up, yet was stopped by
Lucia.
"Just lend me some hands, and Daryl will help me as an inside source, because if Burton and you butt in this matter, I'm
afraid Paul will be exasperated when he gets to know it." explained Lucia.
August agreed understandingly. He thus suggested, "Take Zane and Kylan with you. They've got some well-trained staff
recently, all new faces too, less likely to be spotted."
Lucia and Daryl then spent the whole night doing rehearsal for the next day's rescue plan. Lucia even managed to hold a
conversation with Paula to make it better prepared.
When the day was breaking, Daryl crept into Paula's room. Paula hadn't had any sleep either, only curling up in a tight
ball at the corner, with her knees tucked up and held by her arms. She was staring blankly at the stars that were going to
disappear in the day light.
"There you are." Paula said lightly, hearing the sound of the door, though without any movement.
"You didn't sleep, as I've guessed..." Daryl had got used to such a status of Paula. She went up and sat beside Paula with
the same posture with her as usual. "Lucia and I have confirmed the plan. We couldn't sleep, nor do I think you will." "Thank you for venturing all that for me." Paula's voice was hoarse because she hadn't opened her mouth for too long. Daryl cast a worried look at Paula, and a sense of poignancy clutched at her heart. She stretched out her arms to hold
Paula onto her legs. "You should thank Lucia. I'm not doing this with all my heart." Daryl explained honestly. "You should actually try to please him by guarding me." Paula mocked. "But what you are doing now will only get him to hate you, and ruin the prospect of your relationship with him."
"I've long discarded that extravagant hope." Daryl replied bitterly. "The only wish of mine now is he could stop doing
what would get him regretful in the future."
Paula didn't make any further comment. As time went by, she closed her eyes slowly and her breathing began to get
even.
"Things will turn better from tomorrow, and the vivacious and cheerful Paula will return." Daryl whispered. When Paula

had fallen asleep, Daryl called Lucia discreetly, "Paula will need medical help and counseling to recover."

Paul came to check on Paula in the morning, just to find the two women snuggling up with each other and sleeping lightly. That gave him a sense of relief. He thus instructed Dianna, "Take Miss Thomas to the yard for a walk today. You
don't need to watch her too closely from now on. Just keep her from going out or contacting other people." Light as his voice was, Daryl was still wakened and thus clearly heard what he said. She then sent a message to Lucia
when the door was closed, [Plan is changed. Paula is now allowed to go to that position.]
As their previous plan went, Daryl was to steer the servant away while Zane and his staff infiltrated into the house in the
disguise of body guards after climbing over the wall. Daryl would replace the guard at the gate with Zane when they were
changing the shifts, and then send Paula to the rear wall through the window before they could finally flee away
together.
Since Paula now had the freedom to go to the rear wall, time and risk were largely reduced, and when Paul found out what
had happened, Paula should have arrived at the safe zone.
Lucia informed Zane of the modification, and went waiting outside the rear wall, which was the lowest part of the walls
that surrounded the Thomas' house. They soon heard Daryl's voice, "Dianna, could you get some ginger soup for Miss
Thomas? She may get a chill easily in the yard when she's suddenly exposed outdoors."
"Well..." Dianna hesitated. "Mrs. Thomas, what about bringing Miss Thomas back into her room now and coming out
when the sun gets brighter..."
"Are you watching her or watching me?" Daryl's tone suddenly got harsh. "Or you think I could fly away with her from
the walled yard?"
Dianna was struck dumb. She could only go to the kitchen for the soup without dissent.
Lucia had been listening nervously and waiting for the cue. She then motioned her men to take action as soon as her
phone buzzed as planned. They climbed over the wall and pushed the two women out before everyone got into a van and
drove away.
Paula's face seemed so pale when she sat in the van. Her emaciated body kept trembling while huddling up with Lucia
tightly.
"Don't be afraid, Paula. No one could hurt you any more." Lucia stretched out her arms to hold Paula.
Yet the moment Lucia touched Paula, Paula just groaned with a wince. Lucia gazed at Paula's arm for a moment before
she finally gingerly rolled up Paula's sleeve. Astonishingly, there were scars, either new or old, over all Paula's thin arm. "Are these...?" Lucia took a gasp. Are these made by Paul?
"They two often stage rows, and Paul has imprisoned her in her room for so long." Daryl sighed. "Paula finally got
mental disorder and began self-inflicting."
