Joel knew for a long time that this operation was safe.
However, without actually hearing the results firsthand, he would still be worried no matter what.
Now, the surgery was truly a success.
He also lived up to Lucy’s hopes.
Thinking of this, Joel let the doctors retreat and rest first.
Naturally, someone sent Lucy’s mother, who had just finished the operation, to the intensive care unit to personally watch over her.
Since she had not passed the critical 48-hour period, Lucy was not allowed to see her yet.
She could only glance through the thick glass from afar.
On the white hospital bed, her mother lay down there, thin and pale.
The heartbeat on the monitor next to her beat regularly, but tears started to flow as she watched it.
At some point, Joel came up to her from behind.
He reached out and took her into his arms. Then, he raised his hand to hold the back of her head to press it on his shoulder.
He said gently, “Cry. You’ll feel better after crying.”
Lucy could not hold back any longer. She clutched onto him, pulling at his clothes and bawling her eyes out.
The woman in his arms cried so hard it was as if she was letting out all the worries, grievances, and fears she had accumulated over the years in one go.
Joel stood there motionlessly, letting her hold and lean on him, and allowing her tears to wet his shirt.
An unprecedented feeling of happiness and calm was like a warm current that surged through his heart, filling it up until he could not hold onto anything else.
Lucy did not know how long she had cried, but she only stopped until she was all out of tears.
She let go of him and only felt slightly embarrassed in hindsight, and rubbed the corner of her eyes.
When she saw the big patch of fabric on his shoulder had become wet because of her tears, her face turned red like a tomato.
“That… I’m sorry. I got your clothes dirty.”
Joel laughed, unconcerned.
He raised his hand to brush her hair that had fallen out in disarray, and said, “A boyfriend’s clothes are for you to make dirty.”
The doting tone and warm gaze made Lucy’s heart flutter for some reason.
The temperature on her face grew even hotter and she blushed from her cheeks to her ears.
She wrung her fingers and asked awkwardly, “Are you hungry? Do you want to eat something first?”
Joel had not noticed himself, but now that she mentioned it, he did feel slightly hungry.
After all, since they came over this morning, they had not eaten a single bite at all.
Since their hearts were focused on the person in the operating room, they had not even touched the lunch that Carina had bought them.
Thinking of this, Joel took her hand and said, “I’ll take you to eat your favorite roast duck.”
Lucy was stunned and looked back at her mother in the intensive care room.
“But…”
Joel knew she was reluctant to leave but one could not function on an empty stomach. Besides, he was not willing to let her stay here tonight. Her body would not be able to take it.
Therefore, he lowered his voice and said seriously, “We’ll come back after dinner. Tonight, go to bed at 11:00 pm and come back whenever you wake up tomorrow. If you refuse, then you won’t be allowed to come here tomorrow.”
The man’s serious appearance was slightly fierce.
Lucy could not tell if he was serious or not, but she did not dare to disobey him. Otherwise, if he did not allow her to see her mother tomorrow, she would worry herself to death.
Thus, she nodded reluctantly.
“Alright.”
Lucy was afraid that he would change his mind and immediately picked up the bowl to start eating.
The girl’s mouth was very small. Joel felt a strange feeling of happiness as he watched her hold the bowl and desperately stuffing food into her mouth.
He wanted to laugh but was worried that she would choke and quickly scooped a bowl of soup for her.
“Don’t be so hasty and eat slowly. Come, drink some soup first.”
Lucy did not dare to say anything and quickly put down the bowl before taking a few gulps of the soup.
Perhaps because she drank too quickly, she suddenly choked. She hurriedly put down the bowl before doubling over to cough.
Joel immediately frowned in distress.
“How are you? Are you alright?”
He rubbed her back as he asked.
Lucy waved her hand and said with a red face, “I-I’m fine.”
Joel frowned and took a paper napkin, wiping the corners of her mouth as he softly chided. “What are you drinking so urgently for? No one will fight you for the soup. Don’t you know that you have to chew before swallowing your food?”
Of course, Lucy knew how to eat. She was not a three-year-old child.
It was because she wanted to finish eating sooner so she could go back to the hospital to be with her mother.
Joel had guessed what she was thinking and knew that she would not be able to rest at ease if she was not allowed to go back to the hospital today.
Thus, he no longer forced her and sighed. “Alright, eat. I’ll send you back when you’re done.”
Lucy nodded.
After eating, Joel sent Lucy back to the hospital.
He had a bed added to the intensive care unit for Lucy to lie down and rest after she changed into sterile clothes. She would also be able to see her mother as soon as she looked up, so it was hitting two birds with one stone.
Lucy was very happy with this arrangement.
