Lucy was one of the last people who trailed behind the group. Mace deliberately slowed down his steps to walk alongside her. “You knew him?” he asked in a low voice.
Lucy shook her head, her face blank. “No, I don’t.”
Mace sneaked a look at her but he did not have doubts about her words. Although she was one of the A-list actresses in the entertainment industry, her family and background information was accessible to almost everyone. She should not have any connection with someone like Gale Shelby.
Lucy did not end up staying over at the Grand Royale Villa Residence.
That was because it was her birthday today, and her fans had meticulously organized a fan event that she had to show up for.
She called her assistant around 8:00 pm to take her to the event.
No one in the house knew about her birthday, but the Smiths were still a reasonable bunch of people. They did not try to stop her when she excused herself for work.
Nell called her around 10:00 pm.
She was just getting done with the event when the call came in. Although she did not have to do anything but show up, she still felt incredibly exhausted.
“Why are you the most tired out of everyone on your birthday?”
Lucy mustered up a helpless grin. “Why did you call? What happened?”
“Nothing. I just forgot to give you your present this afternoon. I’ve already asked Nancy to send it to your house. Remember to look out for it.”
Lucy nodded. “Okay. I got it.”
“Go finish whatever you’re doing and rest up. Happy birthday.”
“Thanks. Love you and goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
After hanging up the phone, Nell walked to her bedroom, ready to go to bed.
Her gaze landed on the calendar for a second, and she realized it was already Saturday.
He said that he was going on a business trip for a week. That meant he should be back very soon.
Nell’s lips could not help but tug upwards at that thought and shortly after, she went to bed.
Unexpectedly, she was woken by a furry thing snuggling her in the middle of the night.
She thought it was Lizzy and so she tried to push that thing away from her with a frown.
“Lizzy, stop playing around,” she mumbled sleepily.
The furry thing paused its snuggling. Then, something powerful curled itself around her thin waist, locking her in place firmly.
Alarm bells went off in her head. As she was coming to her senses, she realized that Lizzy was no longer living with her. Who else would be in her house in the middle of the night then?
Her back began to sweat. She jerked open her eyes and saw a black form lying on the bed beside her and had its arms around her with its head resting on her belly.
“Ah!”
She screamed out loud and slapped its head away with her hand.
The man groaned and grabbed her frantic hand in his.
A familiar and magnetic voice rang in her ears, “Who are you slapping? It’s me.”
Nell’s mind went blank for a moment.
The lights were off in the room, so she could not see his face. Yet now that she was finally awake, she could smell his familiar scent.
She let out a breath she did not know she was holding, feeling upset and ridiculous at the same time. Nell landed a punch on his shoulder.
“What are you doing here? You almost scared me to death.”
Gideon chuckled and pulled her into his arms once again.
“Is this your way of welcoming me home? If I had known about this, I wouldn’t have come home in the middle of the night.”
Nell picked up her phone to check the time — it was 3:00 am.
This man. Why did he hurry home in the dead of the night?
She wanted to reprimand him, but those words were stuck in her throat when she felt the chill air lingering on his skin.
In the end, she only managed to ask, “Why did you come home at this time of the day? Didn’t you tell me that you’ll be coming back tomorrow morning?”
“I couldn’t wait that long. I need to see you.”
He held her in his arms and kissed her on the forehead as his hand caressed her stomach.
“Is the baby doing okay? It didn’t bother you with its kicking while I’m gone, did it?”
A warm smile spread across her face at the mention of her baby.
She remembered then that someone came home last night.
He was already dressed impeccably when she looked up at him. She scratched her hair and asked. “What time did you wake up?”
Gideon stared right into her eyes. “7:00 am.”
Nell checked the time and found that it was already 10:00 am.
Fine! Her gaze swept across the man’s muscular physique, and then she looked down at her own body.
Her thin figure had lost some of its sharpness now that she got pregnant. She had become a lot rounder.
Gideon had been treating her as if she was a national treasure. He made sure that she had the best meals and enough rest. It was no wonder that she had put on some weight.
Her expression soured. “Gideon, I need to lose some weight after having the baby,” she mumbled.
Gideon grinned and walked to her, giving her a kiss on the lips.
“You don’t have to do that. I like how chubby you look.”
“You’re a liar.”
“I swear. If I lie, I’ll become a dog.”
“Huh.”
She did not believe his words entirely, frowning as she glanced at him at the corner of her eyes.
“If you think chubby is pretty, then why don’t you get chubby?”
Gideon did not know how to respond to that.
He somehow felt like he had set himself up.
After a moment, he leaned towards Nell and whispered something in her ear.
Nell’s face turned scarlet the very next second.
She began throwing punches at him.
“You jerk! You’re a pervert!”
Gideon chuckled darkly. He did not try to stop her as she continued to hit him.
