For example, the concubine would pretend to pick a flower but fell into the water, then accused the main character of pushing her. Since there was no one around, the main character would not be able to defend her innocence.
Nell turned to look around. True enough, there were only the two of them in the vicinity.
She took a step back.
“Hmm, don’t pick it! Flowers are more beautiful when they bloom. If you pick it up, it’ll be a waste.”
“Hmph—” Yvette chuckled. “Little sister-in-law, it’s just a flower. Do you have to act so dramatic?”
Seeing that Nell was reluctant, Yvette did not force Nell to hold her. Instead, she held onto the railing and leaned her body out.
Nell rubbed her nose and wondered if she was misjudging Yvette.
“I got it! Look, it really is a lotus flower. This is the first time I’ve seen a lotus flower this time of the year.”
Yvette smiled and showed Nell the lotus in her hand. Nell nodded. “It truly is rare.”
“Little sister-in-law, this is for you.” Yvette stuffed the lotus flower into Nell’s hand.
For some reason, as Nell looked at the lotus flower and inhaled its sweet floral fragrance, she felt her head becoming heavy.
Did she have too much to drink?
That did not sound right. At dinner, Nell had only drank one or two glasses. She might be a lightweight but she was not as bad as this!
“Little sister-in-law, what’s wrong with you? You don’t look well.” Yvette’s voice sounded fuzzy in her ears.
“Nothing.” Nell waved her hand. “Maybe just a little tired.”
“In that case, let me bring you to go rest.”
Yvette reached out to help her but Nell refused. “No need, I’ll go by myself.”
In the end, Nell still felt that Yvette was suspicious.
The vigilance in her mind caused her to not want to get too close to this woman.
Nell walked shakily ahead. Behind her, Yvette stood in the gazebo with a cold sneer.
“William Cabot, this time I’ve done you a favor, you’d better remember my contribution.”
She picked up her phone and glanced at the retreating figure in the distance. “Target has just left. No one around. You can act now.”
Nell did not know what was happening to her. Her head hurt tremendously and her feet felt like they were walking on cotton wool. Her head felt heavy while her feet felt feeble.
Beneath her subconscious, Nell thought that something was wrong. She felt just fine before this. Ever since Yvette pushed the lotus flower toward her, her head had started to hurt. There was a problem with that flower…
That scheming little b*tch!
She cursed in her heart. The first thought in her mind was to go somewhere with more people. Otherwise, who knew what that woman wanted to do to her.
At this very moment, there was the sound of footsteps behind her.
Nell panicked and quickly walked as fast as she could manage. However, her feet felt wobbly and weak. Nevertheless, she forced herself to move forward a little quicker.
The person behind her seemed to realize that she sped up and started running toward her.
Just as the footsteps were about to catch up to her, a gentle voice sounded from in front of her. “Second sister-in-law?”
Nell squinted her eyes and saw that it was Bailey.
“Bailey.” Trembling, Nell stretched out her hand to him.
Bailey quickly pushed his wheelchair forward and came up to support her.
Seeing the discoloration in her face, he asked with concern, “What happened to you?”
“Nothing.” Nell shook her head. “Just a little dizzy.”
Bailey’s eyes appeared troubled.
Gideon held her in his arms protectively. “Very well, I’ll bring you back now.”
After saying that, he put down the teacup in his hand and carried Nell into his arms. “We’ll excuse ourselves for the night.”
Justin was a little surprised that Gideon was ready to leave just like that. “Are you sure you’re not staying?”
“No,” Gideon replied politely. “Nelly isn’t used to staying in other people’s houses. I’m worried that she might be uncomfortable, so I’ve booked a hotel. We won’t bother you any longer tonight.”
Justin Griffin looked like he wanted to say something else but Old Madam Griffin was more open-minded.
She waved her hand. “No problem, no problem. As long as you’re comfortable, it’s all the same wherever you choose to stay. Just remember to tell me if you need anything.”
Gideon nodded and walked out with Nell safely in his arms.
When Nell heard that Gideon had agreed to go back to the hotel, she finally felt relieved. She made herself comfortable in his arms and allowed her consciousness to waver in and out.
Gideon had just carried Nell past the main door when he saw William Cabot running toward them with a pale expression. When William reached them, his steps came to a halt.
Gideon had never paid much attention to this uncle of the Griffin family, so he continued walking without acknowledging him.
William Cabot, on the other hand, suddenly spoke to him, “Did Mrs. Leith have too much to drink? If so, you should avoid the cold wind. Why don’t you stay here for a night?”
Gideon was caught by surprise. Not only was William breathless from running but he also cared about Nell’s health.
Gideon’s gaze swept over the mud-caked shoes on William’s feet.
“No, she prefers sleeping in the hotel.”
With that, Gideon paid no more attention to William and left.
The chauffeur had already driven up to the door, so Gideon carried Nell into the car. He also sat in the car, and fearing that she was uncomfortable, placed her in his lap and hugged her.
The car drove forward. At this very moment, his mobile phone “ding” once.
He took his phone out of his pocket and swiped it to take a look.
