“Did you not hear the doctor’s orders not to move? Can’t you call Nancy in if you need something?”
Nancy had kept watch by the door in case Nell would not have a comfortable sleep with someone around or if there was a need when she was awake.
Nell was slightly embarrassed. “I hurt my hands, not my feet. I don’t think I need help for a drink of water.”
Gideon coldly smirked.
“So, you plan to use your disabled hands to carry a cup, huh?”
Nell was looking awkward.
She paused before replying, “I’m sorry, it slipped my mind for a moment.”
The man scoffed and placed her in bed before turning to pour a glass of warm water to hand to her.
Taking the glass, Nell held it between her palms and took sips. She peered at the look on his face and asked, “You hadn’t answered my question. Did you just return from out there?”
“Yes.”
The man answered while catching her arms to pull up her long pajama sleeves.
Her delicate palms, wrapped in thick layers of bandage, were an eyesore.
With a frown, he reached out to unravel the bandage.
Nell immediately stopped him. “Sigh, don’t undo it. The bandage was just changed before bedtime.”
Halting his motion, the man caressed the wound and asked in a deep voice, “Does it still hurt?”
“I’m okay. Doctor Emmy put me on quite a good medication. It’s a bit sore during redressing but I don’t feel anything now.”
Two cuts in exchange for her life was worth it, in her opinion.
Without a word, Gideon gazed at the injury, heartbroken.
As Nell did not want him to keep looking, she withdrew her arms and asked, “Who’s behind this? Did you manage to find out?”
Gideon stared into her eyes. “I thought you’d have guessed.”
Nell hawed. “Celine?”
Gideon nodded.
Nell had kind of figured it out.
She only had a handful of enemies. Only, Nell was puzzled why Celine still picked on her now that the latter was the second young lady of the Garretts.
Why could not Celine just live her own life and stop stirring sh*t?
What good would come out of looking for trouble?
As though he was able to see the question marks in her mind, Gideon answered in a gruff voice, “It’s not just Celine, Jim Garrett is involved too.”
Dumbstruck, Nell was in disbelief. “Uncle Garrett?”
“Yes.”
Gideon did not hide the truth from her. He fished out his phone and played the voice recording he had copied from Celine’s phone.
Nell was in utter shock.
The recording not only revealed that Jim and Celine were the masterminds behind this. Most importantly, the duo shared a father and daughter relationship?
This was... Unbelievable!
Nell took a gulp and another two sips of water from the glass she held before she could swallow this news as a whole.
Lifting her head, she enquired with a face full of doubt, “If she’s an illegitimate daughter of Jim, why did she pretend to be Juliette’s daughter? One is a paternal granddaughter while the other is a maternal granddaughter. Doesn’t a paternal granddaughter share a closer bond than a maternal granddaughter?”
Gideon coldly smirked.
“Prior to Juliette’s death, she left behind a 15% share of Garrett Corporation that only her daughter can inherit. If she was Jim’s daughter, she gets nothing other than an expensive dowry and a ‘Young Lady’ title.”
On the other side, the Garretts’ residence.
Old Master Garrett had received the recording.
It was sent by Gideon.
If Celine was indeed of the Garrett bloodline, Gideon must inform Old Master Garrett before dealing with Celine.
Of course, Celine would be obliterated regardless of whether Old Master Garrett gave his consent but the notification was more of a formality, that this was directed at Celine and not the Garrett family.
In receipt of the recording, Old Master Garrett listened to it and was beyond furious.
He had never thought that his own flesh and blood would do such a stupid thing behind his back!
Putting aside the fact that Jim’s illegitimate daughter took the identity of his sister’s daughter, he even helped Celine to harm his own niece!
What a brute!
Nonetheless, the old master still held it together.
At the end of the day, Jim was his son. No matter in the office or at home, Jim had built a base of confidants and snitches over the years.
Old Master Garrett was advanced in his age and had handed over the reins to his sons in many affairs throughout the years.
As his second son was so smart and excellent, it sometimes put his firstborn at a disadvantage. Hence, to avoid Jim from having a chip on his shoulder, Old Master Garrett at times, tended to take to his side.
For this reason, he dared not make any sudden movements.
However, no sudden movements did not mean there were no movements.
Old Master Garrett quickly instructed in secret to gradually retract the power in Jim’s hands. He was banned from using any privilege in the office as well as the outside environment of which was related to the Garretts.
After this was done, Old Master Garrett unsteadily retrieved a photograph from under his pillow and stared at the young woman in the picture under the moonlight. She was his third child, Juliette.
He bleakly smiled and sighed before finally, placing the photograph back to where it was.
