Celine greeted everyone with a gentle voice and a sweet smile.
She wore a white evening gown that had diamonds across her chest which made her look gorgeous and graceful. The fishtail silhouette outlined her slender figure and she straightened her neck as if she were a proud and holy princess.
If you had only known her for a short while, looking only at her appearance might deceive you.
Owen nodded slightly at her while Janet snorted coldly, turning her head to ignore her.
Celine did not feel embarrassed when she saw their reaction. Instead, she smiled and said, "Today is Grandpa's birthday banquet. Thank you very much for coming to join us. Here’s a toast on behalf of Grandpa.”
Janet sneered, "I see a lot of people in this world who don't even know themselves. They don’t even realize that they are holding a chicken feather as an arrow. Don't think that you can change from a pheasant to a Phoenix just by changing your skin. When your feathered tail has been exposed, you’ll be a laughing stock!”
When Joel heard her criticism, he could not help but stifle a laugh.
When it came to poisonous words, Janet's mouth was the deadliest.
Of course, if Nell and Gideon teased others, they would be on par with her. However, they were relatively noble, and they had always been too lazy to bother with such people.
Celine's smile was a little stiff, but after many years of cultivation, her character was no longer what she used to be.
She quickly calmed down and recovered her expression before she whispered, "I know that you have always misunderstood me, Ms. Hancock, but it doesn’t matter. I always say that a person’s heart will be known in time, so I believe that when the days go by, you will know that I’m not the kind of person you think I am.
“And if you want to talk about the pheasant turning into a phoenix, it seems that some people are more suited to this sentence than I am. After all, I am also the granddaughter of my grandfather. Everything I have today is passed down from my ancestors.
“Unlike some people, who reach the sky by using their body and face. So if you really want to talk about it, that would be a more suitable example than me!”
Janet asked furiously, "What did you just say?"
Gideon and Liam's expressions also sank.
With a calm smile on her face, Celine said softly, "Why are you so angry, Ms. Hancock? Since you wanted to discuss the pheasant and the phoenix, I’ll discuss it with you. But you’re so angry, does it mean that I said the right thing about you?
“Oh, if that’s really the case, then I’m really sorry. It was just a slip of the tongue. Please don't take it to heart. Otherwise, it will be bad if you misunderstood, right?"
Janet was so enraged that her face was red. However, in front of so many people and as it was someone else’s birthday banquet, she had to bear in mind Old Master Garrett’s reputation and not ruin it in public.
Nell pulled at her sleeve secretly.
She raised her eyes to look at Celine. With a beautiful curve at the corners of her lips, she said warmly, "Second Ms. Jennings, you managed to explain a common saying so clearly and thoroughly. It seems that you’ve studied those words very often. If that’s the case, then I'll give you another phrase — you are doomed for self-destruction if you bring about more evil and injustice!
“Celine, every one of us knows what your identity is. In front of Old Master Garrett, we don’t want to expose who you really are, but you have to understand that it’s only because everyone is in good faith and is unwilling to destroy all his hard work but not because we have to hide it for you.
“Anyone intelligent enough will know that under such circumstances, staying put with your tail sandwiched in between your legs is the best choice, but you have provoked us again and again. Why? Is it because you, a grandchild of the Garretts, are sitting uncomfortably in that position? So you want to take a stroll?”
Suddenly, Celine's expression changed.
She stared daggers at Nell as if she wanted to stab her with her gaze immediately.
"It’s really hard for evil to die!”
Nell smiled.
"Nothing can harm us. The Garrett family invited them back, so they have to bear the consequences.”
With that, the group no longer talked about this matter, and instead, they switched the conversation to another topic.
On the other side, Jim brought Celine to a corner and said with a gloomy expression, "What did you say to them just now?"
Celine lowered her head slightly with a nervous expression, "I didn't say anything. I only went to say hello to some acquaintances.”
Jim replied angrily, "Why do you need to greet them? Who do you think you are? Who are Nell and Gideon? You know that they never liked you but you still went over to them, are you looking for trouble?”
Celine pursed her lips.
She raised her head and when she glanced at him, a little grievance could be seen in her eyes.
"Uncle, I actually didn’t want to take the initiative to go there. It's just that all the outsiders know that Sister and I had a big fight before, and even though I have returned to the Garretts now, the past still has a great impact on me.
“The Jennings have let her down from the beginning but this matter has nothing to do with me, so I wondered if I could repair the relationship with her. This way, so long as she’s willing to forgive me, outsiders will see that we are close. Then, naturally, they won’t say anything. Wouldn’t that do us some good?”
