As Jean spoke, her gaze kept darting back and forth and her guilt was written all over her face.
Gideon refused to argue with her anymore. At any rate, the truth had been revealed and she had been caught red-handed.
Jean was his elder and he did not want to overstep his boundary.
So, he said, “I’ll let Grandma take care of this. Watch yourself!”
Then, he led Nell away.
Jean panicked when Gideon said he was going to tell all to Old Master Leith.
She ran toward them and blocked their path.
“Wait, don’t go!”
She rushed outside and managed to stop them. Gideon frowned but remained silent as he waited for her to speak.
Jean panted and it took her a few seconds before she slowed her breathing.
She pleaded. “You mustn’t tell your Grandpa and Grandma. Deon, Auntie’s pleading with you. You must keep this a secret. If your grandparents know about this, I’m done for.”
Gideon replied in a deep voice, “You should’ve thought about this before you went for it. They would’ve known someday.”
Jean was close to crying.
“No, as long as all three of us don’t say a word, how will your grandparents learn about this?”
Gideon laughed harshly.
“Oh? Really? You were willing to sell the jewels Grandma gave you. Are you sure they’ll be kept in the dark forever?”
Jean’s expression shifted and her face was as white as a sheet.
After a while, she began to speak.
“Did… Did you know about that?”
Gideon regarded her solemnly without uttering a response.
Nell explained, “I attended an auction with Gideon yesterday and saw the set of jewels by chance. Don’t worry, Gideon has bid for it, so it won’t end up at Grandpa and Grandma’s for now.
“Nevertheless, I still think you need to come clean to Gideon about what actually happened and how you ended up in this situation. If the truth gets revealed one day, we won’t be able to cover it up for you, even if we wanted to.”
Jean began to relax and nodded.
“Yes, I should come clean to both of you. Aside from you two, I don’t know who else to rely on.”
There were too many people entering and exiting the hall and it was not a suitable place for a discussion.
Finally, Jean suggested a cafe in the vicinity with a peaceful surrounding. Thus, they headed for that area.
As Nancy was not supposed to listen in on the Leith family’s internal affairs, she chose a spot on the first floor to have a cup of coffee.
Gideon, Nell, and Jean headed up to a private room on the second floor.
Once they were seated, Nell ordered coffee for everyone before getting down to business.
“Auntie, it’s not like we can’t help you, but please don’t hide anything from us and tell the truth, so that we can come up with a plan to assist you.”
Right now, Jean was no longer haughty toward Nell.
She knew she was desperate for help, so she put her pride down and sighed. “It’s a long story and it starts from a year ago.”
One year ago, Jean and the Old Madam had a fight. She refused to tell them what they were fighting about and Nell and Gideon did not ask her either.
At that time, Jean bought nearly half of the hall’s raw stones, but most of the stones yielded low-quality jade stones.
That time brought about a period of great distress to her.
Yet, the greater the failure, the more some people wanted to retaliate.
Under Steven’s coaxing, Jean placed several large bets again and spent more than ten bucks on each stone.
Unfortunately, the more she spent, the more losses she endured. She had invested hundreds of millions, but she did not get a good-quality jadestone. In the end, most of the stones were of no value.
Jean could not take the blow. She did not understand why this happened to her when she was off to a good start.
She suspected that Steven was tricking her, but each time, the raw stones were picked by herself. It was not like he could dupe her in this way.
She simply had no clue at all. Moreover, she was already in too deep. If she gave up right now, she could not bring herself to face her own family.
It had been a year, but she still had not reconciled with the Old Madam.
Jean wanted to try again and she decided that she would stop betting if she lost. However, she won.
Thus, she made some money again and placed more bets.
This process repeated itself until she was all out of cash. She borrowed a great deal of money from the people around her and pawned the valuables at home, fully investing herself in the stone-betting event.
Today, Jean sensed that the Leith family had noticed something strange about her. Therefore, she wanted to seek Steven’s help to let her win and gain something, so that she can show off her earnings and manipulate her family.
However, little did she expect to meet Gideon and his companions here.
After listening to her story, Gideon and Nell were at a loss for words.
Nell questioned why the Leith family, who looked like they produced great minds, would have the naive and impulsive Jean for a daughter.
