Prior to going into business, everyone was living in the army compound.
For this reason, Joel and Lucy came to know each other.
Finally getting the picture, Nell came to a realization.
She always had a weird sense that Lucy and Joel knew each other.
There was no hiding at this point.
Joel curled his lips in displeasure. Low in spirits, he said in a gruff voice, “Officer Katz left the military service when grandfather was met with an accident. The whole family then moved out of the capital. Because of that, I lost contact with Lucy, and the next time we met, she was all grown up.”
For a moment, Owen was caught in nostalgia.
He was about to say something when Nell patted Joel on the shoulder in an act of console. “It’s okay, it’s not too late to be meeting now. There’s still time to woo her if you’re into her. You guys are young and in your twenties after all. The time is right!”
Joel turned red in the face.
“Sister-in-law, quit the nonsense! I— I knew her since we were babies. Even if there’s a relationship between us, it’s just a brother-sisterly one at most. There are no other sentiments.”
Owen agreed with this point.
Since they were too familiar with each other, it made it difficult to go for.
Otherwise, he would have never stayed single until today.
At the thought of the faces he used to see 24/7 in the research institute, apart from meals and sleep, Owen felt the chances of a love relationship were growing slim.
Nell nodded at his defensive remark speciously.
“Oh, got it. Hmm, it’s okay. You can stay bros. Although I’m not fond of guy-on-guy action, I have no comment if you want to venture in that direction.”
“Sister-in-law!”
Joel went ballistic. In the end, he swiftly cooled himself down amid Gideon’s chilling gaze.
Due to the numerous auction goods, the auction was split into two halves, where there was a half-hour break in between.
Although Joel was teased a lot by Nell at the beginning, he received a phone call midway, mentioning that his presence was summoned elsewhere.
Hence, he did not stay for long and left during the break after excusing himself.
Owen was not going to leave so early since he finally had the chance to let loose on a rare day off. Thus, he stayed behind to keep them company for the rest of the auction.
During the second half, Nell quickly realized that Lucy and Trent were missing. They must have left.
Jokes aside, she was not as nosy as to pry into other people’s personal affairs. With that, she paid no attention to it.
The auction goods in the second half were fancier and richer than the first half.
Nell saw a few items to her liking. However, she was not in a rush to bid on any of them and waited a little longer as it was only one gift.
Then appeared a set of emeralds.
Nell’s sharp eyes identified that the set of jewelry was similar to the one Gideon had gifted her before.
Realizing the same, Gideon frowned and muttered, “This is the set my aunt has her hands on.”
Nell was taken by surprise.
“Why is it here?”
Gideon shook his head; he had no idea.
Without Joel around and unable to ask anyone, they held their horses.
This jewelry, like the red coral set, came from a royal family in Europe, making it a great demand among the people.
Everyone knew that it was a hundred-to-one chance for such an item to appear on the auction.
So they were more than willing to spend the money. Moreover, those who attended this auction were not short of funds.
This led to quite some intense bidding and it caused the price shoot up to three hundred million.
Nervous, Nell took a glance at the silent, long-faced Gideon beside her.
As Owen had seen the jewelry that Nell possessed, he would be able to discern the connection between the accessory with the Leith family.
However, putting together the conversation between Nell and Gideon, it was not hard to guess that something went wrong.
The room was still in dead silence as no one uttered a word.
Four hundred million? He was out of his mind!
Despite how valuable the jewelry was, it was not worth that much.
Moreover, the matching red coral set was more precious in terms of collection value. That set could be worth six hundred million.
With nobody bidding, the host hammered to seal the deal and sold it to Gideon.
As the auction continued, quite a few great jewelry was displayed.
Nell bade on a green emerald jade bangle as a present for the old madam’s big seventieth.
After the auction, the trio then left the scene together.
Since everybody knew Gideon was here, a lively exchange of greetings was naturally unavoidable.
Those present were all the rich and the powerful in the capital.
Although Gideon was not keen on such a lively atmosphere, he was not exempted from paying due respect.
Due to this very reason, they only managed to get out of there half an hour later.
Owen had carpooled with Joel but with the latter gone, the car was also driven away. So, he was prepared to catch a ride home with Gideon.
When the trio got into the car, Nell opened the box with the jade bangle for a closer inspection. After everything was all right, she kept it away.
Owen said, “Deon, how did Aunt Leith’s jewelry end up here? I’m sure your family isn't short of funds?”
Poker-faced, Gideon solemnly replied, “I don’t think Grandma and the rest know about this.”
In other words, Jean had sold this jewelry behind the family’s back.
Owen was gobsmacked.
Jean had never married and had been single until now. She was pushing forty and yet she acted like a child, often doing something flakey.
