Nell clenched the glass within her grasp, pinching her fingers white.
Her eyes brimmed with tears, allowing a faint red to seep through.
Moments later, she sneered.
Sylvia frowned at such a sight.
“Nelly had too much to drink. Sally, help her upstairs for a rest.”
Sally forced a smile and got up. “Okay.”
She walked over and helped Nell. The latter did not decline the gesture.
For one, Nell refused to spend another minute with these people, and secondly, she was indeed feeling light-headed.
She could hold her liquor but red wine was the death of her. One sip and she was gone.
Her half-full glass of red wine had 52% alcohol content. Of course she was under the influence after gulping down the drink.
Under the support of Sally, Nell climbed to the second floor.
With Nell’s own bedroom no more, Sally put her down in a guest room and poured her a glass of water.
“Lie down and rest here for a while. Call us if you need anything.”
Without a word, Nell turned her back towards Sally.
Gazing at her frail back, Sally’s eyes turned cold.
Nevertheless, her voice remained calm.
“I’ll excuse myself then.”
Nell expressed acknowledgement.
Sally softly closed the door behind her and departed.
Nell’s head was spinning like crazy. The wine tonight was heavier than any she had ever had before.
It did not look like she would be able to make it back tonight. She should inform Gideon in case he got worried sick.
With that in mind, she fumbled for her phone and sent him a WeChat message.
She then felt at ease enough to close her eyes and doze off.
Downstairs in the dining hall.
Sitting on a chair, Dylan gave Sylvia a dirty look.
“Old Madam Jennings, shouldn’t you explain to me about tonight? Didn’t you say Nell had only been in a relationship once? How is she associated with Young Master Morton?”
If it were not for Nell’s stunning looks, he really did not want to have a hand in this due to the hanky-panky between her and Gideon.
Caught in a fix, Sylvia gave a forceful smile.
“It-It’s a long story but a misunderstanding no less. Nell did indeed fall for Jason but they were never together. It’s true. The girl went abroad five years ago. She probably has a crush on Jason but is stuck on the fact that he’s her brother-in-law and that nothing could possibly happen between them.”
Dylan smirked.
“Five years abroad and she’d only once been in a relationship? Old Madam Jennings, do you take me for a fool?”
Sylvia immediately answered, “I’m not lying. You can research that if you don’t believe me.”
At last, Dylan happily nodded.
“Fine, I‘ll trust you for now but there’s a change in terms.”
Sylvia was taken aback.
“What’s the change?”
“I can overlook the matter regarding her and Young Master Morton, as well as her relationship with Gideon Leith, but I want to inspect the goods tonight. If I find it to be true, I’ll send a car to pick her up tomorrow. If it’s untrue... Hmph! I have a strange quirk. I don’t like used goods if you know what I mean!”
Sylvia’s face saw red for a quick second.
Regardless of how much she despised Nell, that granddaughter of hers, she still felt it was insulting to the Eldest Miss standing of the Jennings family.
It was all Nell's fault! What a disappointment she was!
At first, Sylvia was under the impression that Nell shared a great relationship with Gideon and the Jennings could finally rise through the ranks if she supported her to get chummy with Gideon.
She was prepared to endure it the rest of the night when amid haziness, she sensed someone had entered the room.
If she remembered correctly, a maid named Lea Ford was responsible for these few guest rooms.
Hence, she cried out in a hoarse voice, “Is it Lea? I need a glass of water.”
A gentle voice was heard. “Alright, let me pour a glass for you.”
A while later, a warm glass of water was presented by her lips.
Lea pulled her up against the head of the bed and spoke in a soft voice, “Eldest Miss, here you go.”
Nell drank a few gulps from the glass in Lea’s hand. With the dryness in her throat finally quenched, Nell opened her eyes by force and smiled.
“Thank you.”
Dazzled by her half-drunken smile, Lea was bowled over. A hint of conflict alighted her eyes.
Alas, she chose to lower her head to avert her gaze and say, “You’re welcome, Eldest Miss. You smell of alcohol. Do you need me to help you to the bathroom?”
Those familiar with Nell would know that she was a little bit of a neat freak. She could not bear any foreign smell on her.
As expected, Nell nodded.
“Sure, thanks.”
Lea helped her up and led her into the en-suite bathroom.
She thoughtfully ran the bath before guiding Nell into the tub. She then uttered, “Have a nice bath. Call me when you’re done.”
Nell gave a nod.
After Lea was gone, Nell relaxed herself against the tub, basking in the steam as it loosened up her pores.
She was not drunk to the stage that she would pass out. Her head was dizzy but she was more than capable of giving herself a bath.
Splashing the hot water, she cleaned herself properly.
It could be due to soaking in a comfortable hot bath that her body and mind were finally let loose, or perhaps burnout from a day of hard work; her body went limp halfway through her wash. Nell began to turn drowsy.
