Chapter 788
Britney was utterly speechless. When did I ever invite Gavin over for dinner? she wondered.
Seeing her silence, Gavin said, “I asked what you wanted for dinner, and you said home.”
Britney had no words.
She looked at him helplessly. He’d already followed her into the residential complex, and she couldn’t kick him out now.
“Fine, come on up,” Britney said.
Britney lived on the third floor of a six–story walk–up that faced south. The apartment wasn’t large–about a thousand square feet with three bedrooms and two living areas–but it felt spacious enough for one person. She’d decorated it warmly and kept everything spotlessly clean.
Britney grabbed a feather duster and gave the sofa a quick sweep. “Please, sit down.”
Gavin settled onto the couch, his eyes slowly taking in the layout of her home.
Britney poured him a glass of water and set it down. That’s when it hit her–her refrigerator was completely empty.
“Gavin, wait here for a minute. I need to run out and grab some groceries.”
“Britney,” Gavin called out to her. She turned back to look at him.
“Don’t worry about it,” Gavin said. “You’ve had a long day at work. I’ll have my assistant pick something up from a restaurant. What do you feel like eating?”
Britney was quiet for a few seconds. “Anything’s fine.” She was tired, and her cooking skills weren’t excellent anyway. Better to skip the hassle.
Gavin called Wesley.
Britney settled into the armchair nearby. The living room held just the two of them in quiet stillness. Neither spoke, and the air felt thick with tension.
Come to think of it, they’d known each other for months since that chance meeting by the river on Christmas Day. Gavin had been relentless–flowers every day, picking her up after work, dinner dates without fail.
Even so, being alone with him now in her space made her nervous. She still didn’t really know him.
When Gavin’s gaze found her, Britney quickly looked away and grabbed the remote from the coffee table. “Do you want to watch TV?”
Gavin studied her slightly strained expression. “Are you uncomfortable being around me?”
“What?” Britney turned to face him.
Gavin’s voice cut through the silence. “Britney, we’ve known each other for months now. I’ve been pursuing you all this time–doesn’t that count for
anything?”
Britney opened her mouth, then closed it without saying a word.
When she first met Gavin, her heart had been dead inside her chest. Even now, she felt the same.
His efforts barely touched her–his forceful way of pushing into her life simply left her no time to dwell on her pain.
Seeing her silence, Gavin pressed on. “No rush. We’ll take it slow.”
The words seemed meant as much for himself as for her.
