Nelson's furious shout interrupted Kimberley's thoughts.

Her face paled slightly. At that moment, Jerome let go of her hand.

Kimberley lowered her head, a wave of indescribable bitterness and awkwardness washing over her.

She was just about to step away when she surprisingly saw Jerome walking toward Nelson.

She paused. Was the old man's angry shout not directed at her?

She looked up at Nelson, seeing his face still dark, but his gaze was locked entirely on Jerome.

Before she could react, Jerome had already stepped up to Nelson, bending forward in a sincere apology.

"Grandpa, please calm down. Go easy on me..."

Before he even finished speaking, Nelson grabbed his walking cane and swung it down onto Jerome's back without hesitation, roaring in fury.

"How did the Madden family produce such a scumbag like you?! Is this how I raised you? Look at how old this child is, and you're only bringing her home now! What were you doing all this time? You're worse than that bastard Remington! Where am I supposed to put my old face?!"

Before his words faded, Nelson raised the cane again, seemingly ready to strike once more.

Just then, a tiny figure suddenly dashed forward, throwing herself into Jerome's arms and shouting at the old man.

"Great-Grandpa, don't hit Daddy!"

Kimberley hadn't expected Candy to run over and shield her father like that.

She gasped, trying to grab her daughter, but it was too late.

Jerome also hadn't expected his daughter to so bravely protect him. When the little girl rushed into his arms, he instinctively pulled her soft body close, raising his arm to shield her.

But she didn't walk over either; instead, she looked back at her mom for help.

Having heard the words Nelson used to scold Jerome, Kimberley realized she had overthought things.

Nelson was actually standing up for her and Candy. Seeing Candy looking at her, she quickly nodded at her daughter.

Jerome also let go of Candy, giving her a gentle, encouraging push on the back.

Candy walked right up to Nelson and called out again.

"Great-Grandpa."

Nelson shot another glare at Jerome. "Not even giving me a heads-up, leaving me completely unprepared! How rude can you be?"
