Candy was just about to ask her mommy if this was the Mr. Long-Legs who had just left.
Why was Mr. Long-Legs back? But before she could ask, she heard Mr. Long-Legs say he was her daddy.
Candy's eyes flew wide open in utter shock. She snapped her head toward her mother.
"Mommy?"
Kimberley reached out and stroked her daughter's tiny head, nodding.
Inexplicably, her nose stung. She spoke up.
"Haven't you always missed your daddy and wanted to see him? He is your daddy."
Candy looked back at Jerome. Jerome offered the little girl an even more loving and tender smile. "Can you call me Daddy? Daddy has missed you so much too."
He looked at Candy with boundless anticipation, yet he was deeply nervous.
For the first time in his entire life, he felt this kind of anxiety and utter lack of confidence.
He didn't know if his daughter would reject him or hate him.
He desperately wanted to hug her, but terrified of scaring her, he didn't dare move a muscle.
Candy stared at Jerome for a few more seconds. Suddenly, her eyes turned red, tears pooling in her eyes. Her little lip trembled, and she burst out crying loudly.
Just as Jerome's heart plummeted to the floor, convinced the little girl hated him and wouldn't accept him, she suddenly threw herself into his arms and hugged him tightly.
"Waaah! Why did it take you so long to come see me, Daddy? Waaah! I've been waiting so long for you, even Snowy is getting old! Waaah! All the other kids have daddies. I didn't have one. They all said I was a pitiful girl with no daddy, waaah..."
The little girl buried her face into his chest, sobbing harder and harder, her tiny body shaking.
Jerome was completely overwhelmed. He patted the little girl's back, his eyes brimming with heartache and guilt.
She quickly wiped away her tears and turned back around.
To her surprise, the moment she turned around, she met Jerome's intense stare. Kimberley froze. Embarrassed by her tears, she awkwardly averted her gaze.
Jerome took in her red nose and tearful eyes. His gaze darkened slightly as he mouthed a question.
"Who is Snowy?"
Kimberley pointed at a small suitcase nearby.
Jerome followed her finger. Sitting on top of a small pink suitcase, right next to a large white one, was a fluffy white plush bunny with long ears.
Recalling what Kimberley had just told him about giving the little girl a bunny doll in his name, Jerome instantly understood. Snowy must be the name his daughter had given the doll.
He quickly scooped his daughter up into his arms and pointed at the plush bunny.
