Kimberley desperately shot Karen a warning look.
"Karen, this is Mr. Madden. He happened to be at the hospital and stopped by to check on me. Actually, he was just leaving. Could you walk him to the elevator? I need to take Candy inside to wash her hands, she's been playing outside way too long."
After instructing Karen, Kimberley turned her attention back to Jerome.
"I need to look after her, so I won't see you off, Mr. Madden."
Without waiting for a reply, she practically carried Candy straight toward the en-suite bathroom.
Kimberley's heart was hammering frantically against her ribs.
She was terrified that at any second, Jerome would snatch Candy away, or try to talk to her and demand to see her face.
Thankfully, until she shoved Candy into the bathroom, slipped inside herself, and locked the door behind them, the man didn't say a word or make a single move to stop her.
"Um... Mr. Madden, shall I walk you out?"
At Karen's hesitant voice, Jerome finally tore his calculating gaze away from the bathroom door.
He gave Karen a polite nod and stepped out of the hospital room.
Karen awkwardly wrung her hands as she walked beside him, unable to resist stealing several secretive glances at his profile.
She was incredibly nervous, terrified he was going to interrogate her. But Jerome simply walked to the elevator with an air of complete nonchalance. Just as he arrived, the doors slid open. He offered Karen one final nod before stepping inside.
As soon as the doors closed, Karen spun around and practically sprinted back to the room.
Oh my god, oh my god. She had been working for Kimberley since the day she found out she was pregnant.
Kimberley had always insisted the baby didn't have a father, claiming she had used a sperm bank to have Candy.
So who the hell was that man?
That face... there was no mistaking how much he looked like Candy.
Inside the bathroom.
Candy stood by the sink while Kimberley turned on the faucet, leaving the water running as she spaced out completely.
Candy tilted her head back, staring at her mother in total confusion.
"Mama! Mama!"
