They walked out of the villa and through the courtyard, making their way toward the helicopter.
Naturally, Mei worried about an ambush, but they made it almost all the way to the aircraft without incident.
Seeing the chopper right in front of her, the gleam of triumph in Mei's eyes brightened. She had no intention of bringing Remington along.
For one, he was too difficult to control.
Second, having the young heir of the Dashiell and Madden families was enough leverage.
She sneered coldly at Remington's back. "Don't try to track us. And just like we agreed, put Eartha Porter Madden on a plane out of the country! Otherwise, I won't hesitate to end your son!"
"Don't do anything stupid," Remington's voice rasped. "If my son loses a single hair, I swear the Dashiell family will hunt you to the ends of the earth!"
Mei scoffed, though fear gnawed at her.
Given the choice, she didn't want to make an enemy out of both families, nor did she want to push things past the point of no return.
The thought of being hunted globally by their combined forces was terrifying.
She glanced into the helicopter, easily taking in its interior.
There was no ambush. Only her eldest son lay curled up in the back, covered in blood and apparently unconscious.
Anxious to flee, Mei ordered Remington again.
"Turn around!"
She commanded him to take two steps forward, while she walked backward toward the chopper with the baby.
"Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Dashiell."
Mei mocked, gesturing for the hitman to take the pilot's seat as she prepared to climb in.
A victorious smile stretched across her face. Just then, a faint, almost imperceptible sound sliced through the air.
Thwip!
Mei's body jolted violently. She tipped forward like a felled tree, her arms going slack and dropping Joy.
As the baby plummeted toward the pavement, Remington lunged with lightning speed, throwing himself forward to catch Joy safely against his chest just before impact.
