Lizetta shot him a fierce glare. "Can you please be serious for one minute?!"
Her mother wasn't a matchmaking deity or a fertility goddess. What was he praying for?
Remington turned to her, the picture of perfect innocence.
"I meant every word from the bottom of my heart, how is that not serious? Besides, you're not my mother-in-law. How do you know she didn't love hearing it?"
Lizetta opened her mouth to argue, but Remington suddenly arched an eyebrow and smiled.
"See? She loved it. She just gave us her blessing."
Lizetta followed his gaze. Just at that exact moment, a beam of sunlight broke through the morning clouds, striking the photograph on the headstone perfectly.
The wind rustled the nearby trees, causing the golden light to dance across the picture.
Elsa's smile suddenly looked incredibly vivid, as if she were genuinely beaming at them with approval.
Lizetta gasped in delight and turned to Remington, the two of them sharing a warm, quiet smile.
Stepping forward, Lizetta carefully wiped a speck of dust off the stone.
"Mom, I promise to take good care of Grandpa and Grandma. Don't worry, we'll come visit you again soon. Once the police are finished with Eartha, I'll come back and tell you all about it."
She turned around, only to find Remington standing right behind her.
Smiling, she reached her hand out, assuming he was going to hold it. Instead, he spun around and crouched down in front of her.
Lizetta blinked in surprise, but looking at his broad, sturdy back, she couldn't resist. With a joyful laugh, she hopped up and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
If he wanted to carry her down the mountain, she certainly wasn't going to say no.
Besides, he had been absolutely relentless last night. Even though she practiced dance daily and possessed far more stamina and flexibility than the average woman, her legs were still trembling.
She had barely made it up the stairs earlier without her knees buckling.
Remington had walked behind her the entire time; he had undoubtedly noticed how unsteady she was on her feet and was taking the initiative.
Basking in his thoughtfulness, she poked his shoulder.
