Lizetta stated it as an absolute fact; she was entirely certain of it.
She had never forgotten that the entire nightmare began with the West family. It was Evelina's premature labor, and Stella deliberately scheming to get Remington out of Zion City.
Lizetta refused to believe the West family's hands were clean in this.
"Yes. The family had found a perfect match for Joseph early on, but just a week before the procedure, the donor drowned in a freak accident. By then, Joseph had already been prepped and moved to a sterile room. If the surgery didn't happen, he would die. Someone forced Hanna's hand to target you."
Remington's eyes turned freezing cold. The perpetrator's objective was crystal clear.
They wanted to kill Lizetta and the baby.
Even if they failed to pull that off, the resulting fallout would permanently destroy his relationship with Lizetta.
It was pure, venomous malice. Every time Remington thought about it, a violent wave of hatred surged through him.
Lizetta leaned against his chest, her thoughts drifting back to what Remington had told Jerome the other day.
He suspected Eartha Porter Madden was the reason Hans Gardenia managed to get out of jail early.
If that was the case, they were dealing with a mastermind operating entirely in the shadows. But she couldn't help but wonder if Martin and Stella had secretly aligned with Eartha long before any of this happened.
Lizetta had never expected the rabbit hole to go this deep, pulling so many people into the mess.
Back then, the thing that fueled her rage toward Remington the most was the thought that if he hadn't driven out to the suburbs for Stella and Evelina, if he had just stayed by her side, the tragedy never would have happened. Looking back now, she realized just how naive she had been.
With so many people meticulously plotting her death, even if they had missed their window that night, they would have simply waited for the next perfect opportunity. It was impossible to guard against.
Realizing this lifted another fraction of the heavy burden off Lizetta's heart.
"What are you thinking about?"
Seeing her lost in thought, Remington gently stroked her back.
Lizetta finally looked up at him. "I was thinking about how everyone has a rebellious streak. Since so many people are desperate to tear us apart and can't stand the thought of us being happy, we're just going to have to stick together and flaunt our perfect happiness in all their faces. Let them choke on it."
