Liz remembered when she first arrived at the Dashiell family estate. She was terrified of being alone, terrified of the dark, and terrified of thunderstorms. Remington had told her the exact same thing back then.
But in the end, he always relented, letting her stick by his side and hide out in his room.
Her heart instantly softened at the memory. She gently stroked Ron's hair.
"Never mind, Ron. We're magnanimous. Let's not hold a grudge against him."
Ron turned to look at Liz. She pointed toward Remington and made a little 'hug' gesture.
Ron blinked his big, bright eyes, then grudgingly shuffled his little bottom forward, hesitantly reaching his arms out to Remington.
Remington clicked his tongue, putting on an exaggerated look of flattery as he said to Liz,
"My girlfriend is the absolute best."
He scooped the baby up, then wrapped his free arm around Liz’s waist. The three of them walked slowly downstairs, practically pressed together as one solid unit.
Down in the dining room, the maids had, as expected, prepared a lavish breakfast.
At his age, Ron was already starting on solid foods.
He had just finished his formula, so Liz asked a maid for a small bowl of nourishing soup. Sitting Ron on her lap, she carefully blew on each spoonful to cool it before feeding him.
"Mrs. Dashiell, please let me take care of Mr. Ron. You should eat your own breakfast,"
the maid offered hurriedly, having caught a sharp look from Remington.
This was Liz's first time feeding a baby, and she found the task of nourishing such a cute little human surprisingly delightful.
Ron was an enthusiastic eater. He craned his little neck toward the spoon every single time, his eyes tracking its every movement.
He couldn't speak, but the little guy certainly had the potential for a wildly successful live-streaming food channel.
Liz smiled. "It's fine. If you haven't eaten yet, go ahead. I'm in no rush. I'll eat after I finish feeding him."
The maid hesitated, casting another nervous glance at Remington.
Remington gave a nearly imperceptible nod, and only then did the maid turn and leave.
Liz was entirely focused on Ron and noticed none of this silent exchange. But just as she went to offer Ron another spoonful, the weight vanished from her lap.
Remington had simply plucked the baby up with one hand and settled him on his own knee.
