Jane replied, “I put the kids down for a nap together. Connor always cries when he wakes up. I don’t know if it was an accident, but Chloe hit her brother in the face and scratched him. Connor started crying even louder.

“He was still crying when I carried him out of the car.”

If Chloe could talk, she might say that Connor was being too noisy and that she was trying to get him to stop, but she accidentally hit him instead.
