The car pulled into Clayton's driveway. Before Jade could open her door, Clayton slowly opened his eyes, his voice low and serious. "Everything the White family owns has belonged to Alicia from the very beginning. Instead of obsessing over reclaiming things that were never yours and risking ending up with nothing, you'd be better off figuring out how to improve yourself. Only then will the things that belong to you actually stay yours."
Jade paused, her hand hovering over the door handle. She knew Clayton was warning her to let go of her delusions.
"I know," she murmured softly, nodding without a trace of her usual defiance.
In the past, she would have lost her mind. She would have screamed and argued with him, demanding to know why she wasn't entitled to the White family fortune when she shared their blood.
But now, she was just quiet. The bitter truth had settled in: everything the family had built truly belonged to Alicia.
She was even starting to believe the horrifying rumors—the ones whispering that Brandon White had murdered Alicia's biological parents.
Jade had never seen herself as the villain before. She used to fly into a rage whenever people gossiped that the true heirs had been killed off by Brandon.
She hadn't believed it. Sure, her father was ruthless, but murder? That had seemed impossible.
But now? She believed it completely.
If Brandon could casually order a hit on his own flesh and blood, what was stopping him from eliminating Alicia's parents to clear his path?
"You reap what you sow," Clayton said cryptically as he stepped out of the car.
Jade's current life—this second chance—was purely the result of Alicia's undeserved grace.
If she went back to her old, destructive ways, she wouldn't survive it this time.
A hot, suffocating wave of despair crashed over Jade, making her eyes sting.
It wasn't because Clayton doubted her; it was the sheer terror of what her father had actually done.
If the truth came out and Brandon was definitively proven to be a murderer, what would happen to her? How would Alicia and Clayton look at her then? She would be branded as a killer's daughter for the rest of her life.
Her mind spinning, Jade followed Clayton into the foyer. She was so lost in thought that she didn't immediately notice Susanna sprawled on the hardwood floor.
Susanna's eyes were red and teary. She was clutching a pair of house slippers—presumably meant for Jade—but Jade had no idea why the woman was sitting on the ground.
