Jade and Brandon’s faces darkened as they glared at Alicia. “Don’t talk nonsense,” Brandon snapped.
Tears streaming down her cheeks, Alicia spoke up again. “I’m not making anything up. Every White Corporation executive present heard it—Grandfather said he would never forgive… He said turning on your own flesh and blood is the greatest sin—something that would bring down ruin and retribution. He was furious, everyone saw it.”
Brandon’s expression grew uglier. Unconsciously, he took a step back, while all the reporters stared at Brandon and Jade in shock.
The way Reginald had cut off his own son had always fueled speculation, and now Alicia’s revelations—though cryptic—seemed to hint at something far darker: that Brandon might have been responsible for the death of Alicia’s parents.
“I wish it was just a misunderstanding,” Alicia choked out, showing her poise in front of the cameras. “I hope that when the truth finally comes out, Uncle, you and Jade can join me in honoring Grandfather’s memory.”
It wasn’t Alicia who barred Jade and Brandon from the White family—it was Grandfather’s decision.
“Alicia, stop twisting the truth. My father—” Jade burst out angrily.
But Alicia cut her off. “Jade, Uncle’s background was never respectable to begin with. He’s the child of a housekeeper who used underhanded means to get pregnant. Grandfather only brought you both back out of a sense of duty. Besides, Uncle made it clear years ago that he never wanted anything from the White family. Isn’t that right?” She tossed the question right at Jade, forcing her to answer.
Sure enough, every reporter turned their cameras back to Jade and Brandon.
Brandon’s origins had always been a sore spot. If he were merely an illegitimate son from an affair, it would have been easier to sweep under the rug. But this—this was scandalous even by those standards.
Brandon’s face was thunderous; he shot Alicia a venomous glare and stormed out of the room.
Jade’s fury wasn’t far behind. “Alicia, your luck won’t last forever. If Clayton refuses to marry you, I’d like to see how long you survive at White Corporation.” She spun around and followed Brandon out, her anger palpable.
The reporters swarmed after them, forcing Jade and Brandon to make a hasty, humiliating retreat.
“I’m still thinking it over…” Clayton’s gaze dropped. “If I walk away from White Corporation now, I don’t have the right mentor or platform to support my ambitions.”
Natalia’s worry deepened. “Clayton, if you refuse to marry Alicia, I can help you find someone who’ll see your worth!”
She couldn’t let Clayton marry Alicia—if he did, he’d be shackled to White Corporation forever.
Natalia’s mind raced—she needed to contact her patron, see if he’d be willing to bring Clayton aboard.
Clayton was a true talent, and her patron had always admired him. But Clayton’s loyalty to Reginald had kept him at White Corporation. Now that Reginald was gone, if Clayton didn’t want to be tied down for life, joining her patron was his only real option.
A spark of hope lit in Natalia’s chest. If she could bring Clayton over… she’d be both his benefactor and the one who opened the door for him.
