Sophie quickly picked up on Jenna's fear that Adler might end up like Freddie had. Everything seemed perfect at first. But as time went on, Freddie treated his wife like yesterday's news. Sophie reassured her, saying, "I can't speak for everyone, but Adler's not like that."
"Why?" Jenna asked.
"Because he's always been the one to take the hits," Sophie replied.
"…"
Honestly, how many guys out there are okay with being bossed around by the same woman for over a decade?
"…Yeah, that makes sense," Jenna admitted, sinking into the couch with a heavy heart. The wedding was just two days away, but the shadow of her parents' failed marriage loomed large, making her anxious about taking the plunge.
Jenna had opened up to Sophie about her family issues, so Sophie knew exactly what was eating at her. Adler, busy with wedding stuff, would come home his usual carefree self, seemingly oblivious to Jenna's emotional turmoil. Sophie had tried dropping hints, but Adler, clueless as ever, just wasn't getting it.
Jenna shook her head, resigned. Being a strong, independent woman, Adler probably figured she had no reason to be upset.
"Jenna..."
Sophie wanted to comfort her, but Jenna wasn't in the mood for talking; she just wanted to crash. Adler had vanished into the bathroom a while ago and hadn’t reappeared. As Sophie watched Jenna head upstairs alone, she couldn't help but worry.
Colby, standing nearby, said, "Don't stress, Adler will sort it out."
"Sort it out? I was hinting all through dinner, and he didn't pick up on a thing."
"Then how come you missed all of Sophie's hints at dinner?"
"Cross my heart, I did notice!" Adler insisted. "I know you hate making a scene. If I tried to comfort you in front of Sophie and Colby, you'd feel awkward. I just want you to know, I'm marrying one woman in this lifetime, and that's you. I'd never cheat; I'd deserve whatever I got if I did."
"Who asked you to swear!" Jenna's expression softened as she took the bouquet from him, a rare hint of shyness in her voice. "No more of this, okay?"
"What… no more of what?"
"All these flowers, where am I supposed to put them?" Jenna's room was already bursting at the seams with Adler's floral surprise. Since they were crashing at the Costello family's place while their new home was being renovated, dealing with this mountain of roses would be quite the chore.
