It was pretty obvious to me that my mom, who wasn't exactly a pro at handling babies, jumped at the chance to go on a business trip with my dad, leaving little Sophie for me to look after.

I glanced at Sophie, snug in my arms, her bright, innocent eyes locked onto mine, totally clueless about everything else around her. Maybe... this wasn't so bad after all.

One day, I was chilling by the bay window with a book, when I noticed that Sophie had somehow climbed out of her cradle and was giving me the cutest, most intense stare.

“Are you hungry?” I asked.

Sophie tried to respond but only managed some adorable baby gibberish.

Putting my book down, I was about to mix up the formula the nanny had kindly prepped earlier, when I heard Sophie’s tiny voice squeak out, “Bwother!”

Those two syllables seemed like they took all the effort in the world for her to say.

I stopped in my tracks, a bit unsure, and asked, “Sophie, what did you just say?”

“Bwother!” she repeated, this time with more confidence, her little eyes all serious.

“Brother?”

“Bwother!” Her pronunciation was definitely getting there.

In that moment, something inside me just melted. With a grin, I gently pinched her chubby cheek and said, “Yes, brother.”

“Bwother…” Sophie still couldn’t nail the word “brother,” but I was over the moon. This was her first word!

My little princess had started talking.

“Damita…!” I was about to step in, but Sophie suddenly lunged forward and bit Damita’s finger.

Damita was startled and asked, “How does she know how to bite?”

“She’s probably teething,” I said, continuing to comfort Sophie until she calmed down.

Damita sighed, realizing her dreams of hearing “Mommy” first were dashed. It goes to show, you can’t take shortcuts when it comes to parenting.

After Andrew and Damita left, I settled Sophie down for bed as usual. Even though she was tiny, she had a thing for bedtime stories. Every time she listened to one, she’d drift off into a peaceful sleep and make it through the night without a fuss.

That night, like always, I picked up a fairy tale book and started spinning tales of princesses and princes for her…
