Finn had a feeling that he was going to lose his mind. If it was not bad enough that he was stuffed into a car which was way too small for his gigantic frame, his legs had started to cramp. Behind him, he could still hear the jeers and mocking taunts of the four men, who were behaving as if they were little kids. He glanced at Tracy, whose fingers were tight as a bowstring while holding the steering wheel and whipped his head behind.
"Calm down, kids! Can’t you see we are trying to focus here?"
What exactly were they paying attention to? Finn had no idea about it.
They had been driving on and on for hours. From dusk to dawn, with the sunrays breaking through the horizon, the sky was turning a shade of vivid light pink. It was a beautiful sight, one to behold, and Finn would have appreciated it a bit more if his knees were not hitting his throat. They were stuck in this small tin can of a car for ages, and Finn had no idea if he was going to get a chance to even breathe properly.
Because even after driving for so long, they were still on the high–fucking–way. There was no set destination, and they had no idea where Tracy was taking them. Despite this, no one dared to question her, especially not when she had turned Dominic into a very ugly toad for a good fifteen minutes and only let him turn back into a human after Tao insisted that they would be on their best behaviour. Something he was yet to see, given that they were still shooting daggers at Ajax and Laxus, who were not even close to backing down.
The only good thing about this entire situation was that the mood in the car had improved. The unsettling rage had transformed into something more, something completely different, other than anger and vengeance. It had transformed into something bleak, like an unspoken grief. It was fragile and delicate, and no one in the vehicle was willing to break it. It was subtly dangerous, as if one wrong move could ruin everything. They still remembered what happened inside the labyrinth, but everyone refused to talk about it.
The only odd one out was Veronica—from what Tracy said, she could be called an elf or an angel, depending on their ideology about the follower of a god or a goddess. She had been awake throughout the entire journey without even taking what one would call a power nap. It was as if she didn’t need any sleep, and given that she was not really mortal, maybe it was true.
And then—
He raised his head and looked at Tracy. The woman was holding the steering wheel with a gaze as wild as the storm that she had brought inside the labyrinth. She looked like she was an inch away from just turning the car upside down with just a single swift turn of the steering wheel.
She had not said a word other than the crazy spell that she had cast on Dominic. Her lips were set in a thin line, and the smile lines around her eyes were no longer crinkled. With her expression blank, she was staring ahead. Finn could see that there was still a hint of simmering rage within her, but at least she was no longer on the verge of exploding like a human live bomb. That was quite a relief; at least he knew that this woman was not going to turn them all into toads and then watch them suffer as they croaked at her to turn them back into humans.
Of course, if it were a kiss to the lips, he would have agreed to let Tracy turn him into a toad, but it wasn’t. So, he was rather unwilling.
