"I am not," Inez refused right away. Her hands were clenching her lap as she tried to calm down the fear that started to surge within her. The last thing she wanted was someone to recognize that she was a siren in this godawful prison.
"You are his daughter. Even when you look like your mother, there is still some semblance that you share with your father."
"You are mistaken." Inez firmly refused to admit that she was the daughter of a siren.
"There is no denying the truth, my dear. You look so much like him that anyone who has seen him once can see the resemblance between you and your father. Your eyes, especially; they have so much vulnerability at the same time," he rubbed his thumb and forefinger together with a pondering look on his face. "Just the right tinge of seduction. They are just like your father’s." He crawled over to where the two sisters were sitting and winked at them. "Don’t worry; I am not a tattletale. I am not going to say anything to the guards; that will be too easy for them, right?"
Inez pursed her lips, trying to ease her hammering heart behind her ribs. The dungeon was filled with all kinds of twisted criminals. Could she even trust this man? Especially when he was unhinged enough to massacre his entire pack? Though he had a valid reason for that, it was still terrifying. The man tilted his head to one side and mused, "What a surprise. How come no one realised that you were a siren? Your blood sings too loud. Even now, I can feel it. Siren blood. His blood." He lifted his head and stared straight at her. "Your father’s."
Her pulse started hammering. "You knew him?"
"I watched him rot, slowly and painfully." The man’s voice cracked with bitterness. "The female alpha who claimed him swore that she loved him. She wanted to chain the storm without realising what she was even trying to do. However, she soon realised that a creature of the sea could never be restrained. So she chained him, determined to break him, crumble him until he gave in to her. And for a time, she almost broke him."
Scarlet’s eyes went wide when she heard the words of the man. "Mom..."
The prisoner’s eyes flicked to Scarlet, and he hummed. "You must be her half-sister, right? I saw that woman fall right in front of my eyes. So I know that you two cannot be related to the same father." Clicking his tongue, the man sighed. "What a poor thing. He was such a kind man, an odd one out of all. Sirens are usually more unrestrained and chaotic. I remember that he was brought to your mother as an offering for an alliance. He was supposed to stay just for a week and leave, but shifters’ greed doesn’t really know bounds, does it?"
And Inez felt her rage leaving the bounds as well. A strange emotion coursed through her veins, where she could feel the molten fury bubble. She had never thought that she was capable of murder, but at that moment, she did have the intent to harm someone. The anger within her skin threatened to consume her. The rage was so alien that Inez wanted to break open the bars of this cell and then throttle her mother to death. Her own mother and she would happily watch her die at that very moment.
