Chapter 298: Changing Situation

Tracy’s words left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth.

However, there was work that was supposed to be done. Inez watched as Killian commanded Finn to take her, Tracy, back to the lodge before he rushed to the main lodge and called all the enforcers. Inez wanted to follow him, but she soon realised that there was nothing she could do to help him.

"You don’t need to feel guilty about it; you can’t do anything in this situation," said Tracy. Inez thought that the woman sounded more and more like a devil’s temptation because, for a second, Inez truly wanted to believe that there was absolutely nothing that she could do for Killian, and she didn’t need to feel sorry about being cooped up in the lodge.

But thankfully, she still had some sense of rationality left within her.

"How can I not feel guilty when he is doing all the work and I am just sitting around doing nothing?" Inez opened her arms and motioned them around. Accepting Killian meant accepting the pack, and now that the pack was in danger — most probably due to him — she just couldn’t sit still.

Something flickered in Tracy’s eyes, and just like before, they turned stormy; there were zaps of electricity within them. It was exactly like she had seen the last time, but Inez knew that this was not the time to question her ability to make her eyes thunderous. She was more worried about Killian and the death of the shifter. If he were one of the enforcers who went on a mission or went missing after getting kidnapped at the borders of the land, Inez wondered how Killian would react.

He was the alpha of this pack and took his responsibility quite seriously; he naturally wouldn’t be happy if someone else died right under his nose.

"Shifters are going missing all over the packs and territories," remarked Tracy as she made her way to the kitchen. With a flick of her hand, she started the coffee machine and pulled open the cabinets before finding the bag of beef jerky that Inez had set aside. "It’s just not this territory if that is what you are feeling guilty about. This has nothing to do with you. It is not a ’you’ problem; I am telling you this just in case you start spiralling into a whirlpool of guilt and concern."

Inez raised her head and exclaimed, "Since when did shifters start going missing?" Why didn’t she know anything about these disappearances?

"I bet you are thinking why you didn’t know anything about these disappearances, aren’t you?" Tracy remarked, seeing right through her. Sighing, she ran her hand through her hair. "There is no need to think about it too much; you are not the only one who doesn’t know anything about the kidnapping of the shifters. With the council trying to keep these disappearances a secret, it’s rare for anyone to know just what is going on outside."

"I wish I could." Tracy sounded wistful. "But I cannot."

"But why not?" Inez asked as she got up from the couch just as Tracy sat down. "You know something, don’t you? Then why won’t you tell me?"

"It’s not that I don’t want to tell you," Tracy blew over the foam of her latte before continuing. "It’s because I cannot. There is more than just what you can see, Inez. There are a hell of a lot of dynamics at play at the moment. They are not stable at all. Do you want me to pull a fragment and shake the entire infrastructure when it’s already rickety enough? Do you know what will happen if I just snap off a piece?" 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Something bad?" Inez asked, genuinely sounding so confused that her confusion was palpable in her tone.

"Something worse." Tracy corrected. He took a sip of her coffee, and the thunder in her eyes started to get more and more vibrant. "I cannot sacrifice everything just to satisfy your momentary curiosity, Inez. But don’t worry. You will soon get an answer to your questions. I believe you already have an answer—at least the hook to find them."
