"Where were you?" Killian demanded the second they walked through the main lodge. I
Inez paused and turned to look at Tracy, who had promised her that Killian would still be asleep. However, from the looks of it, the man was very much awake.
"He is stronger than I thought," Tracy muttered under her breath. "I expected that the spell would knock him out nicely for a good ten hours. Never expected that he would wake up so quickly."
Inez rolled her eyes. She should have known better, especially when she sensed his worry through the pack link. Raising her hands in a calming manner, she said to Killian, "I am fine. We just went on a little drive and nothing else."
"Finn told me that you were missing for six hours." Killian countered.
Inez turned silent. She glanced at the beta, who raised his hands in surrender and said to her, "Don’t look at me like that. I didn’t want to betray you but there is no going against him when he goes all alpha mode."
Inez simply rolled her eyes. She didn’t believe a word that Finn said to her because she knew that the man wouldn’t dare to betray her in a heartbeat if he had to choose between her and Killian.
"I am fine," Inez repeated as she raised her hand and placed it on Killian’s bicep. "Calm down, alright?"
Of course he knew that he needed to calm the fuck down but he couldn’t. He kept remembering the incapacitating fear he had felt when he found out that Inez had followed this witch foolishly and left the territory with her. He couldn’t even chase after her because Tracy had cast some kind of spell on him which stopped him from leaving the pack. Even Third Eye couldn’t do anything.
He told him that the witch who cast a spell this strong must be bloody powerful.
Even her spell doesn’t feel right—it’s fleeting and dynamic. It changes every second. One moment she was smelling like enchiladas and now she smells ancient, like she had stepped out from a hundred-year-old temple. She smells powerful.
She did. Tracy might be downplaying her powers, but Killian knew that this woman was way too powerful compared to what she was letting on. However, that was not important. What was important was how trusting Inez was. After the betrayal that she received at the hands of Dominic, he thought that she would know better than to trust others without a reason.
When he thought of the things that could happen to her when she was gone...the fear he had felt... he had never felt that kind of fear before. It was the fear of losing something essential to you. Something you knew you wouldn’t be happy without.
And that fucking terrified him.
Feeling uncomfortable and exposed, Killian turned to look away. "I was just thinking about how you do not even take me seriously. You knew that I would worry, and yet you left with that witch without letting me know—"
"You want to leave, don’t you?" Her accusation was spoken softly. Way too empty of any resentment or judgment, like she was not upset with his desire to step away from her.
Shit. He sucked in a breath and said, "Why would you even ask that?"
"I am not asking you. I was stating a fact. Your muscles are bunched up tight. Like someone coiled to spring... and run for the hills."
He arched a brow at the taunt. "So, you think after you left with a witch and went missing for hours, I am not supposed to get tense?"
Inez crossed her arms in front of her. Her eyes narrowed at him. "I know you. And I know that right now, the thing that you want to do at the moment is get the fuck away from me. Look me in the eye and say that I am wrong."
